Why You Should Work on Creating Stability in Your Life
The transformative power of stability
It was the height of summer and life was hectic. A friend’s request thrust me into an unexpected role – hosting a young man who had fallen victim to a con artist and left homeless. I didn’t know it at the time, but this experience would remind me of the incredible value of having stability in one’s life.
Life tends to get muddled when everything falls apart, making clear thinking a challenging feat. According to the charity Mind, homelessness can cause mental health problems such as depression and low self-esteem, which can in turn affect relationships, health and make you feel insecure.
As I reflect on this, I can picture scenes of Eddie Murphy in the movie Trading Places – a lively reminder that stability is a crucial foundation for success. It’s like having an anchor when everything feels uncertain; you don’t need everything to be flawless, just one aspect – whether it’s your job, home, relationships, health, or finances.
The more areas you can stabilise, the better your creativity and problem-solving skills become. It’s the reason some people find comfort in keeping cash at home, never moving house or following one career path. It provides a tangible sense of safety and stability.
Now, back to the young man whose life had unraveled. When he first arrived he seemed like a mere shadow of his former self, someone who had been robbed of joy and purpose. Then, what started as a temporary arrangement turned into a transformative journey that I will never forget.
From walking with a limp, his eyes blank as if his very life had been sucked out of him, he soon exuded newfound strength and determination. We talked about his dreams and aspirations. Gradually, his eyes began to shine again, and his appetite for life returned. Witnessing his metamorphosis was truly awe-inspiring.
It turned out, he had a passion for art. I asked him to paint some pieces for me. When I paid for them, he cried. He said it was the first time he’d made money from anything he’d created. Encouraged to pursue his interest, he painted even more stunning pieces that reflected his resilience and newfound hope. It became clear that, without stability, there would have been no canvas on which he could have painted a brighter future.
This experience taught me that stability is necessary for personal growth and well-being. This simple yet profound truth will resonate with anyone who has experienced its transformative power.
So, amidst life’s whirlwinds, let us remember to create moments of stillness and seasons of stability for ourselves and others. Whether it’s providing support for a friend in need or maintaining a balanced life, it is within those moments that the fertile ground for growth, creativity, and resilience is found.
