5 Life Truths You Need to Understand if You Want to Succeed

Real talk tips

I was at the post office, waiting my turn like a good citizen, when a man walked in. He took one look at the long queue, then marched right up to the counter, acting like he owned the place.

We try to set him straight, telling him to join the back of the queue, but his response? “My transaction will only take a second.” And guess what? Despite everyone giving him the side-eye and telling the cashier he was jumping the queue, he got served!

We all stood there, jaws dropped, trying to process the madness. Life went on, but I walked away with some crucial life lessons and reminders about making it in life. The world won’t ever hand you a permission slip for your dreams.

Moreover, success isn’t just about working hard; it’s about having the right mindset and facing challenges head-on.

1. Expect the Unexpected

Life is full of curveballs on the road to success. People will surprise you by doing things you don’t expect them to. They will do those things anyway and get what they want while you wait by the sidelines. If you wait for the perfect moment, you will miss out. Success loves those who take risks, even if they’re not fully prepared, or others think they’re wrong.

2. Time is Gold

You’ll never have enough time, so make the time you have count. Elon Musk compares building a company to baking a cake — get those ingredients right. The same principle applies in every area of life. Prioritise your tasks and invest time in the things that really matter for your success. I have an acronym which at first glance sounds counter-intuitive — ADD. If you don’t have time for it Automate, Delegate or Delete it.

3. Procrastination is the Enemy

You’ll never feel like doing what you’re supposed to. Procrastination will sweet-talk you into thinking it’s fine to do something later. Don’t buy it. Push through the resistance; start before you feel ready. As Zig Ziglar wisely said, “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”

4. Hard Work is only part of the equation, not the answer

Forget the myth that hard work is the golden ticket. Think about all the hard workers you know who aren’t successful. Success demands strategic moves and smart decisions. Warren Buffett nailed it when he said, “Really successful people say no to almost everything.”

Accept that hard work alone won’t cut it then work smart, not just hard.

5. Success in One Area Doesn’t Guarantee Overall Victory

Being successful in one part of your life doesn’t automatically make you a superhero in everything else. Balance is key. Tony Robbins put it perfectly with this definition. “Success is doing what you want, when you want, where you want, with whom you want, as much as you want.” Aim for balance to conquer all your life goals.

The Big Takeaway

On my own success journey these lessons have been my guide. Embrace challenges, manage your time well, say goodbye to procrastination, mix hard work with smart decisions, and find that sweet spot of balance. Each step forward will remind you just how much grit and determination you have.
