Why You Should Consider Living In A Developing Country Over A Developed One.

The Developed World Has Big Problems Too!

Photo by Quinn Buffing on Unsplash

For those who don’t know, the UN classifies countries into developed or developing economies.

Examples of Developed Economies/Countries United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Sweden, Japan, etc

Examples of Developing Economies/Countries — Costa Rica, Mexico, South Africa, Brazil, India, South America, etc

In the middle of the pandemic in 2020, I packed my bags and moved from The United States, a developed country, to a developing country in South America.

There was no looking back for me! No matter how scary the journey ahead seemed.

I’d had enough with the developed world. I needed a change.

You can gather some of the reasons why I left the developed world in the articles below.

Here’s Why I Chose To Live In A Developing Country

Better Weather

Better weather equals more sunshine for me.

I traded the comforts of the developed world for more sunshine in the developing world.

For me, the weather is essential to my well-being and mental health.

Every year, I suffered from seasonal winter depression and was tired of living a large chunk of the year depressed and unmotivated because I was too cold.

The vitamin D supplements weren’t cutting it anymore, my melanin yearned desperately for sunshine.

Fresher and Cheaper Food

I left the United States because I wanted access to fresher, cheaper, and healthier food/produce.

Living in a food desert in a low-income neighborhood in the United States opened my eyes to the politics involved in various populations having access to fresh healthy food.

Most of the corner shops in my neighborhood had only cheap processed food stocked.

It was impossible to find fresh fruits and vegetables, without driving 20 mins or more into the city.

These days, I’m surrounded by little stores with access to a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Reduced Cost Of Living

Developing countries usually have a cheaper cost of living for rent and food.

As an entrepreneur/freelancer, it was important for me to reduce my general cost of living to ensure my financial health.

I cut down my monthly expenses (rent, food, gas, internet, and car insurance) from $3,000 to $1000 a month.

Reducing my cost of living has given me the mental space, time, and peace of mind to focus on building multiple income streams online.

Saving More Money To Invest

Reducing my cost of living has allowed me to have extra money to invest in digital assets like cryptocurrency.

Cutting your cost of living (which is increasing on a global level due to inflation) is a viable path towards having more money in your bank account, as is building multiple streams of income.

It’s important to keep in mind that, not all developing countries are necessarily cheap.

If saving money is a part of your personal financial goals, you have to be intentional in your research about finding a country that meets these needs.

Keep in mind that you can move to a low-cost developing country, without sacrificing the quality of life you have access to.

More Community-Based Cultures

Most developed countries in the western world have very individualistic cultures.

Whereas you find more community-based cultures in developing countries.

People come together easily to help and support each other.

One of my local friends had a group of people in his local community come together to build his home.

I appreciate the benefits of living, being, and learning from a community.

Live Better

Depending on your needs, it is possible to live a better and more relaxed life in a developing world.

Access to better weather, healthier and fresher food, and a lower cost of living can improve your overall well-being as you’re less stressed out.
