Why This Productivity Beast Made Me Leave Notion
5 reasons I left Notion for Craft
If you're anything like me, you're searching desperately for the ideal note-taking app.
Maintaining order and easy access to my notes is difficult when I combine business and travel.
Ideally, I want a system that makes it easy to enter, organize, and retrieve my data.
Also, I want my data to be my data.
I've used Notion a lot since I first came upon it over two years ago. I like many things about it, but other things irritate me.
- For instance, I wouldn't say I liked how slow and bloated everything was. Additionally, it performs poorly on mobile.
- Moving information from one place to another was a hassle.
Meanwhile, I've experimented with other applications like Obsidian and Roam Research, but they haven't won me.
I liked Roam Research because of its backlinks, but I can't bring myself to pay the premium that the app requires.
I switched from Notion to Craft a few months back.
What does My Productivity System look like?
I don't think you should try to fit everything into one software; you need programs for different things.
I use the following applications: Evernote, Google Calendar, Todoist, and Craft.
- I use Evernote to store all the documents, such as receipts or unrelated notes, that I wish to keep and eventually find.
- I use an essential notebook, Google Calendar, and Todoist to organize my day and keep track of my chores.
- Before switching to Craft, I used Notion as my private wiki. It's condensed material that I've already organized in my thoughts because this is where I record stuff I've already focused on.
Let's now discuss why I stopped using Notion and started using Craft.
Reason 1: The Appearance
I adore how Craft seems. It's incredibly tidy, simple, and well-managed.
Maintaining the status quo is simple.
It is set up so you can designate several areas for different purposes; for instance, I have one for work and one for personal items.
You can make project folders in such areas. Then, you can create documents in the project folders. After that, you can add more pages to an existing record. Therefore, structuring the entire thing to operate is extremely simple.
Furthermore, I can choose everything and group it so that a new page will be created even if I later decide to give some stuff its page.
Additionally, you can have a plain-looking link or one of those lovely, personalized cards.
Craft looks fantastic on mobile devices as well. However, one thing I've never liked about Notion is how it rearranges text and breaks up words on smaller devices.
Reason 2: Usability
I like how straightforward organizing and entering content is. I believe there are too many features, but the most important to me are all included.
Toggles are great, and I’m glad they were added in the most recent version. After leaving Notion, that was one of the things I missed the most.
They support Markdown, which I adore. Their iOS shortcuts are fantastic; they make it simple to add information to Craft.
Did I also mention that you can build backlinks? That is very potent. The fact that they are crammed with incredible functionality while still being light and minimalistic astounds me the most.
Reason 3: It fits my workflow
Craft is an excellent fit for my workflow.
For once, I enjoy writing by hand and using the Apple pencil. It seems to improve my thinking for some reason. In addition, I can quickly add notes to my paper using Craft.
In the application itself, I can annotate PDFs. And moving stuff around is simple.
Craft is quite simple to use. Recent information is available in tabs that are simple to switch between using keyboard shortcuts in the desktop version.
I adore being able to open papers simultaneously from many locations. For instance, I have an area for work and another for personal content. I don't have to switch between the spaces because I can simultaneously open them.
I also frequently use the top layer of breadcrumbs. I can also use touch ID on iOS to lock and unlock my data.
Reason 4: I can do what I want with my data.
They released this with the most recent update, and it's my favorite section.
My information can be kept on their servers, locally on my computer or device, or in a cloud service like iCloud or Google Drive.
Reason 5: Sharing and exporting capabilities.
I adore how simple it is to export my data from Craft.
First of all, it automatically generates stunning PDFs. After that, it immediately interfaces with different programs. For example, I frequently use it to upload my content to Ulysses, my preferred writing program.
Markdown is supported by Craft as well, so it integrates perfectly. I adore being able to add deep links to a page.
When setting up a task and knowing I require a specific page, I frequently add these to Todoist. When I click the link, Craft is immediately opened, allowing me to start immediately. It quickens the process.
To allow others to view your information directly on the web, you can offer a hidden URL. Additionally, you can work with others on documents.
Closing Thoughts
So, to summarize, Craft appeals to me greatly. I've never turned back to Notion since I transitioned to Craft.
There are a few minimal problems, but I believe they will be resolved.
Also, I adore how open and receptive they are in their communication. I wish more businesses were run that way.
Have you ever used Craft? What are your experiences with Craft, and which app were you using to run your productivity system before moving to Craft?
