Summary

The article critiques the pursuit of personal happiness in a world rife with problems such as violence, immorality, and environmental degradation, suggesting that this disregard for global issues is a form of insanity.

Abstract

The author of the article argues that the single-minded pursuit of happiness in the face of widespread societal and global issues is not only irrational but also indicative of a deeper societal madness. Despite the clear evidence of the world's problems, such as the coronavirus pandemic and ongoing wars, people continue to seek personal paradises without addressing the underlying issues of greed, indifference to evil, and exploitation. The article suggests that material progress has not been matched by moral or ethical advancements, and that the few who have attempted to change the status quo have been largely ignored. The author questions the sanity of striving for happiness without acknowledging or working to rectify the many wrongs in the world.

Why the Obsession With Being Happy at All Costs Reflects Insanity

We live in a dangerous world where we fear each other and know that everything goes wrong because of the greed and indifference to evil that characterize most of our population.

However, most people want to be happy no matter what. These people dream of building a private paradise in an all wrong world where violence, immorality, and hypocrisy prevail, without paying attention to what happens to the poor and the weak, and without considering many evils.

What happened with the coronavirus pandemic clearly showed us that we cannot be indifferent to evil.

If we destroy our planet, if our population is fed poorly and does not have the antibodies necessary to fight diseases, if no one cares about the injustices in the world and even wild animals are exploited by men, the consequences of our mistakes are dramatic.

Even so, people did not become more serious. Everyone just hopes that everything will go back to the way it was before, although the virus is very strong and nothing seems to get better with time.

Now an unexpected war between Russia and Ukraine shakes the world’s population.

However, this is not the first time this has happened. We are used to wars, crimes, terrorism, poverty, and countless horrors.

Despite this, most people are indifferent to what happens in the world as long as they are not affected, or as long as they are not affected for a long time.

How long will humanity have this attitude?

There doesn’t seem to be any progress regarding world awareness. The progress we observe is always material. Everyone just strives to create something that can be sold and made a profit.

Only rare heroes have tried to change the absurd situation of the world we live in without achieving anything, and no one thinks of imitating them.

Virtually everyone lives trying to be happy anyway.

Virtually everyone believes that the obsession with happiness in a world characterized by countless evils is something ‘normal’.

However, if we are reasonable, we must surely conclude that most people’s insistence on living happily in a world that is all wrong while doing nothing to totally change the way this world works is sheer madness.

Do you think we should just forget about what we can’t change and think about nicer things?
