Summary

The undefined website emphasizes the importance of systems thinking and visualization in the implementation of Obeya, a leadership and management tool that enhances team collaboration, strategic development, and problem-solving by focusing on the big picture and changing team habits and behaviors.

Abstract

The undefined website article delves into the significance of systems thinking and visualization within the Obeya framework, a management tool designed to improve business operations. It outlines that Obeya is not just about setting up a room with visual aids but about fostering a change in team dynamics and cognitive processes. The article explains that Obeya helps teams to collectively determine goals, develop strategies, implement plans, avoid errors, and maintain a focus on the overall system rather than isolated parts. By using visualizations, teams can make complex processes and system components more understandable, which aids in identifying root causes of issues rather than merely addressing symptoms. The article suggests that these visual tools are the outcome of collaborative thinking and should be presented in a clear, simple, and logical manner to facilitate effective communication and problem-solving.

Opinions

  • The author believes that the introduction of Obeya requires a shift in team habits and behaviors to be effective.
  • Visual materials in Obeya are seen as essential tools that support cognitive abilities and appropriate actions by making the essence of collaborative work visible.
  • Systems thinking is highlighted as a crucial concept in Obeya, where employees should view themselves as part of a larger system and consider the broader implications of their actions.
  • The article suggests that addressing only the symptoms of problems, such as poor product quality, is insufficient; the root causes must be identified and addressed.
  • The author advises using simple and logical visual structures to represent system elements and their interactions, which are the result of a collaborative thinking process.
  • The conclusion reiterates the importance of adopting systems thinking and creative use of visualization to display information in an easily understandable way.

Don’t think you can start with an Obeya and get better results right away. First, you have to change the habits and behaviors in your team.

Introduction & Review

In my last article, I wrote about why the Obeya is the ideal leadership and management tool. The Obeya helps to:

  • determine goals together in the team
  • develop a strategy
  • implement the strategy
  • avoid mistakes
  • focus on the big picture

Systems thinking and visualization

When you enter an Obeya, you see one thing above all: the walls are full of visualizations of the work.

Visual materials are tools designed to support employees’ cognitive abilities and enable them to act appropriately. The visualizations make the essence of the joint work visible.

It is important to understand how the plans, diagrams, and ideas on the walls of the Obeya are created.

For this purpose, each Obeya has several key concepts and rules of conduct that all team members need to know.

First and foremost is systems thinking. If each manager or employee only looks at one part, many causes of problems cannot be identified.

Example: If the quality of the products is getting deteriorated, additional quality tests at the end of production can only fix symptoms.

Instead, you should find the root cause of the quality problems.

So your employees should see themselves as part of a system and always consider the big picture.

Make ideas, processes, and system components visually visible. This can be done, for example, with the diagrams on the walls of the Obeyas.

But they are only the result of the collaborative thinking process: Which system element plays a role, and when, and how can it be influenced? This information can be visually represented.

Advice: Use clear, simple visual structures and a logical flow of information.

Conclusion

Change the habits and behaviors in your team to systems thinking. Be creative together. Use visualization in an easy, understandable way to display the results.
