Why Listening to Medium Articles is Better Than Reading

Using the Speechify Listening Feature

Are you one of the many readers who have the Speechify listening option available?

Other writers mentioned having this listening feature weeks ago, and I guess I just assumed that some would have it, and others wouldn’t.

When the feature unexpectedly popped up on my articles a couple of weeks ago, I was so excited to try it! Now I can’t imagine not having it — it’s been such a great experience.

Cliff Weitzman founded Speechify as a solution for his own issues of dyslexia which made studying difficult. He had tried other text-to-speech apps and they left him frustrated, so he created his own.

Speechify is easy to use, it has a variety of voices and accents and a range of speeds.

The voices sound so natural. “Emma” and “Salli” are American accents; “Stephanie” is British. “Nate” and “Matthew” are American accents; and “Harry” is British.

The range of speed is 100 words per minute (which actually sounds slightly drunk) to 900 wpm, which is pretty near a hyper-chipmunk speed. 220–280 wpm is my preferred listening range.

Speechify is user friendly. It does appear to default to the American male accent as well as a mid range speed.

If you spend hours on the computer writing, editing, doing any social media or other reading, the listening feature can give your eyes a welcome break from screen time.

Plus, you’re still able to keep up with your favorite writers and their latest articles!

I’ve heard a couple of writers mention they’ve received emails to let them know they will be receiving a bonus of some sort involving Speechify. I haven’t received an email, but it’s nice to know there’s the possibility of a reward.

There are a couple of situations with Speechify that I am not clear on.

(1) The cursor follows the article, but can be “jumpy”. I’m not sure if that’s a glitch that we’ll just have to adjust to, or if it’s one they can fix.

(2) Changing the speed may affect reading time. When you increase the speed, the reading time on a 2-minute article decreases to 1:36. I’m hoping we still get credit for the 2 minutes, but I haven’t read anything that addresses this.

I’ve always loved reading, but Speechify is not just about the reading. It takes reading to the next level. I hope you are enjoying it as much as I am, and that Medium keeps it as a permanent feature.
