#1 Reason It’s Okay For People to Highlight Your Articles
They’re Really Not Being Rude

While looking through my Medium feed this morning, I noticed a rant from an writer about followers who just highlight her articles. Maybe they leave a single clap, but with no comments. Pam Winter says: “Why do some followers think it’s helpful or encouraging to read one of my stories and then highlight almost half of it, without ever leaving a comment,” and then concludes her rant by deciding to block followers who do this. WHAT????!!!!!
If you, too, have been frustrated by readers who don’t leave comments, or who only leave one clap, let me give you a HUGE reason why it’s okay:
When it comes to monetization, claps don’t pay. Comments don’t pay. Views don’t pay. Only reads pay.
Yes, it’s nice when someone comments on what you’ve written, and tells you something they enjoyed, or adds something of value to the subject matter. It’s nice when they clap, because all of those things make you feel validated.
But they don’t help your earnings!
So unless you’re writing just for the interaction, don’t worry about getting the comments and claps on what you write. It’s okay if someone highlights, because it’s proof they are actually taking time to read your article.
Please, encourage people to highlight your articles! If they leave a comment, if they clap, wonderful, but those actions don’t necessarily prove that someone has read your article.
And for heaven’s sake! Don’t block your readers. It’s like telling a customer that you don’t want to sell your product to them. It’s like saying you don’t want your paycheck. (Good news: at least you can unblock followers.)
Of course, Medium’s algorithm could change tomorrow and monetize comments and claps, and if it does, I hope someone clues me in (please!)
