Why It Is Difficult For Many Medium Writers To Make Money On Medium?

Sharing some of my learning with fellow Medium writers.

Why I am not making money on Medium? A very basic question asked by many writers. / Picture by the author

Most of the writers on Medium often reach out to me saying “Our stories get curated, distributed but we don’t make a good amount of money” some often argue that Medium doesn’t show your stories to more people.

By good money here I mean crossing $100 a month writing on Medium, as just 5% of the writers on Medium make over $100+ a month.

I made just $0.01 on the first day of my Medium Partner program days and when I asked my friend that I have made $0.01 from Medium, he was like “It is enough to buy a house in silicon valley”

I have this theory of;

If you can make $0.01 on a platform then you could also make $10,000 from that platform.

Here are the 3 mistakes writers do on Medium;

Not publishing more often

Some top and famous writers on Medium publish over 36+ stories on Medium. Publishing 9 stories a week is a very difficult task and it takes time but you could publish at least 5 stories a week and that still will be super awesome.

There are a lot of writers who often complain but not making money from Medium but they are publishing fewer stories on Medium. The more content you create the more money you will make.

I have talked to some of the famous creators on Medium and most of them agreed upon this fact that those who publish less, make less money. Remember, we aren’t talking about those writers who write one story and get viral, we are talking about the rest 95% of the writers who don’t make a good amount of money from Medium.

Not researching before publishing

Before you start writing you should understand that research is the building block for anyone who publishes content online. Remember the infamous quote “Smart work is better than hard work”

What type of research I should do?

It depends upon what you want. Do you want to submit your story to a specific publication and go viral? or More people could find your stories through the search engine?

If you want to submit a viral story to a big publication then the first thing you need is to read the submission guidelines, scroll through some of the publication posts and find what type of things resonates more with the type of the audience? The more research you do, the better you will get results.

If you want that people find your articles through the search engine then the very first thing to do is to find a keyword, optimize your articles for the search engine and write a really good long-form article. Long-form articles is an article of more than 2,500+ words. Your title, sub-title, SEO description is very important in this regard. This should be a planned process.

Write with no goals

If your primary goal is to reach $100 a month on Medium then you have to change your perspective. Your primary goal should be something other than making money. Keep earnings from your writings as a secondary goal, that will be fine. There is nothing wrong with saying that I write on Medium for money.

When you are more driven toward a thing, you just think about that, not the impacts that produce it. If your goal is to write quality articles, then it will impact your earnings too. That is how having a primary goal could directly impact your secondary goals.
