Why is the Sound of Rain So Relaxing?

It’s more scientific than you think

Photo by Mike Kotsch on Unsplash

I love the sound of an early morning rain falling on the roof as I lay snuggled under the soft covers. It’s so relaxing to lay there warm and dry while the heavens wash the earth clean.

The sound of rain makes me feel peaceful yet inspired, but I never knew why till I did some research and found that the topic has been studied. Who knew water falling from the sky could have so many effects on us?

Rain emits frequencies

I always sleep with a fan on at night for white noise to block out all the other inconsistent house noises since I’m a very light sleeper.

Rain emits frequencies referred to as “pink noise,” which are similar to the white noise that fans produce, but at lower frequencies, and is believed to improve sleep.

Maybe I should get one of those little indoor water fountain machines to go with my fan.

It increases melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone that controls our sleep cycles. Darkness triggers the body to release it, which gets us ready for a good night’s rest. The overcast skies that roll in with rainstorms have the same effect of triggering melatonin, thus producing a relaxing effect on the body.

Negative Ions

Negative ions are caused by strong electrical friction in the air from things like waterfalls, waves, and thunder and lightning. There is some evidence that being exposed to moderate amounts of negative ions can improve oxygen flow, lower blood pressure, and even improve symptoms of depression, though the data is inconclusive.

It’s consistent and repetitive

The sound of rain falling is soothing because it is dependable. It’s reliable. Drop after drop follows each other out of the clouds to splash down on leaves, roofs, and maybe your tongue.

Humans like reliable things. Reliable is safe. When we know what to expect, we can relax.

It might be a gentle sprinkle or pounding drops, but rain follows the same pattern over and over. It’s like Old Faithful. Did you feel a drip on your face? You know the drill. Umbrellas up!

It’s cleansing

Just like a shower washes away the sweat and grime of the day and refreshes us, rain cleanses the earth and renews life. It washes dust and dirt from leaves (and cars!) It signifies the idea of a fresh start.

So the next time the skies open up on you, embrace the benefits of Nature’s therapy at no charge. And if you have the chance to curl up on the couch with a cup of tea and the window cracked, all the better.
