How To Earn More Than $25 On Medium Every Month. (My Story)

Every problem you face has a solution

The Backstory:

Before I started writing on Medium, I had stopped writing for a very long time. I wanted to get back into writing but didn’t know how as I used to write fiction during my childhood and teenage years – sad poetry and depressing stories.

So when my husband said “no more sad stuff,” I didn’t know what to write. I hadn’t written anything in over 7–8 years anyway.

Present Time – Year 2023.

I stumbled upon Medium.

Of course, everyone who reads doesn’t write, but everyone who writes for sure reads.

Finding Medium worked out really well for me. I loved the platform. Every style of personal writing and every niche/topic was celebrated here. People here inspired me.

I realized this was a place I could share raw stories from my personal journey, in fact anything I wanted. Funny anecdotes, my struggles and the hard-won lessons… in short writing about any experience I ever had.

Happiest Moment of My Life (excluding stuff since I met my husband, of course):

When I earned my first few cents in just one night, I was overjoyed. I could not believe that my writing had earned some dough. Before Medium I had never monetised my writing.

I had a rule to never put a price tag on my art.

Achievement Overload:

I made $23 in the first 15 days of my writing on Medium. I was motivated to work hard. Then life started happening, and I started derailing on Medium.

My Mistakes:

The biggest mistake I made was I stopped using Medium. I went from opening it every few minutes to not opening it for two to three days. And to make matters worse, I also stopped posting stories. I didn’t stay consistent.

Out of sight. Out of mind. And in this case: Out of money too.

Everyone here keeps telling you that staying consistent is the key factor to winning the Medium money-making game. But it didn’t get into my head until I stopped.

I Earned Less Than $25 for Two Months:

Because instead of taking responsibility I started playing the blame game.

  • It’s due to fraudulent activity.
  • It’s due to the new Medium algorithm.
  • It’s due to not engaging enough.
  • My writing isn’t making money anyway. (It is disheartening to see an article I worked hard on that made $0.10.)
  • I don’t have a laptop, so my subscribers weren’t getting notifications when I posted a story, which made me not want to publish through my phone. So I just kept writing without posting anything.

What Saved Me In Medium- Medium Itself:

All these factors had solutions that I didn’t even try fixing. Then I found Komal. She was still earning money, even with the changes. And all the other complaints I had. I read more and more articles by people who were earning regardless of the algorithm change and the other excuses I was making.

So I decided to scrap my excuses and learn how to overcome my challenges.

Turning Things Aroung. Here Are The Changes I’ve Made Since November 18th:

  1. Change my mindset – it’s not for money; it’s for truly enjoying writing and Medium. I thought back to why I fell in love with writing and this community in the first place.
  2. Reading and commenting because I love reading and connecting with people. Spending at least 20 minutes a day doing this on Medium.
  3. The new algorithm supports human writers over AI, which means no more quick articles and more hard work (I actually appreciate this – thank you, Medium).
  4. I started scheduling work to publish through a laptop so readers get notifications when my articles are available.
  5. No rules and boundaries – Write whenever and wherever I want without thinking about posting. (I’m writing this at 12:56 AM on a Tuesday because I can’t sleep.)

One last thing: When chasing money becomes the primary motivation, quality and passion tend to suffer.

Always anchor first in yourself and your passions while making sure no one suffers because of your wants or needs.

With this simple belief, you can trust that your efforts will be rewarded and add satisfaction to your life.
