Why I Take A Mindful Break From The World: A Simple Guide

“Meditation is a mysterious method of self-restoration….It is basically an existential “time-out” — a way to “come up for a breath of air” out of the noisy clutter of the world.-Vera Nazarian

Introduction

If generations before us watched us from a distance, they might puzzle how we cope. Before the era of the covid-19 pandemic, we were overwhelmed. We are still overwhelmed. Despite this, we keep at the grind. The thing is, we ought to be conscious of our needs so we attend to them adequately. If not, you and I live our lives by rote. Think of a situation where you are living but ain’t living. It’s like you just exist but lack impact. It took me almost a decade to realize the importance of self-care.

It took breaking down multiple times before I realized what the universe was saying. I needed time-outs. Now, I am unapologetic about it. Why? Cos when I return, I do so with vigor. I can give to humanity as much as I intended. You know what else? I feel as good as I look. I feel connected to myself when I am not overloaded.

My Self-Care Rituals

Whenever I’m stressed out, I have certain rituals. My stressors range from anger to burnout to exhaustion to crazy deadlines. When anger is the stressor, I play soft music to calm down. If the anger is deep-seated, I take a prolonged shower. If I still feel tense after the shower, I take a long walk. Usually, this clears my head. The icing on the cake is prayer with meditation. If my workload is the stressor and I am working in a team, I ask for an extended deadline. If I am alone, I make the deadline. There is no point beating a dead horse. Time out and taking a step back bring some clarity. The only modification I make to my ritual above is sometimes instead of taking a bath, I go swimming. This is an enormous stress reliever. Logistics, however, forces me to take long baths more often.

What Happens When I Reconnect With Myself

Life has thrown many blows at me. I have survived mostly using these rituals above. There are certain challenges that call for specialized interventions[like sleep]. If you ask me to choose the best amongst all, that would be prayer and meditation. These are timeless. I gain clarity, serenity, and perspective. I have new drive and vigor.

Takeaway

Time out is essential. It is the first step I take in beginning my journey to reconnecting with myself. I discharge, disconnect, recharge, then reconnect. Are you addicted to grinding, hustling, and succeeding? Do you experience the fear of missing out[FOMO] anytime you consider time-outs? Remember, what’s yours is yours. Give yourself a chance and disconnect.
