Why I Learn Foreign Languages In My Free Time
Winter break is quickly approaching, and now that I’m going to have a little pause from school, tests, and writing papers, I plan to… study more with the extra time I’ll have. Yes, I know. Even for me, when I sit back and think about it, it’s surprising! When I have free time, I study languages. This habit started years ago when I started learning French. After I became fluent in French and realized how rewarding it was, I knew I didn’t want to stop after learning just one foreign language. I had many more languages I wanted to learn! In fact, I even made a whole long list of all the languages that I would love to learn one day.
It’s all about the people.
There are many reasons why one might decide to learn a foreign language. For me, it’s always been primarily about the people. Usually, I choose a specific language because I am fascinated by the country, but I’m more importantly fascinated by the people that make up that country. I don’t want to travel to a country without having any moments of connection with the people I meet there. Even when I’m in my own country at the most boring locations in my hometown, an outing can be fun because of my interactions with the people there. I want to be as polite as I can when traveling to a new country and show the people my appreciation for their culture. I started learning Italian because of the warm and friendly Italians I’ve met. I wanted more of these people who were so enthusiastic about life in my world. Of course, I usually love many other things that make me decide to learn a language, but people are the main motivator. I love meeting new people and wish I could speak every language to connect, learn life lessons from, and hopefully help and share a few of my own life lessons with as well!
It helps me to be more creative!
Language learning is the thing that gets me out of my own head. Strangely enough, though at the end of a full day of school I can feel exhausted from learning, this isn’t the case when it comes to languages. I’m always ready to learn more when it comes to languages! Sitting down to learn something new in a foreign language makes me feel hopeful for all the possible ways I can use each new word or grammar structure to communicate more efficiently in that language. At the end of a language learning session, I feel accomplished, refreshed, and already excited to learn more the next day!
If you’re curious to read more about the languages I speak, here is another article I wrote that goes specifically into why I’m learning each of my target languages.
Language learning is a huge passion of mine. I know I would add more languages to my life if I had more time. For now, I’m learning and perfecting the three that I’m currently studying. Hopefully, one day I’ll be able to speak many like the accomplished polyglots I see so often online. They endlessly inspire me.
