I’m Teaching Myself Three Languages This Year

Growing up, I always thought that multilingual people were cooler than the rest of us. I wanted to be like them. I saw the multilingual people in my life make friends everywhere they went. I also admired how they had another way of seeing the world. To me, these people had a superpower. The only problem was that I didn’t think it was possible for me to achieve this dream of being fluent in another language. Luckily, I was wrong! A few years ago, I decided to make a genuine and committed attempt to try and learn French. I spent hours upon hours teaching myself grammar rules on my bedroom floor, making ridiculous sounds in front of my mirror to try and improve my accent, and made countless mistakes in front of native speakers to finally achieve fluency.

Achieving fluency

It took lots of work, but I achieved what I had set out to do. Then, I had the crazy thought that I wanted to do it all over again! The problem is that there are so many languages I wanted to learn, so this time I decided I would try to learn two new languages at once. It is usually not recommended to learn more than one foreign language at once in the language learning community. This is common knowledge in the multilingual community, so I thought… why not learn three at once instead? I am always ready for a challenge and love having a project. At the beginning of my journey with languages, I thought it wasn’t even possible for me to learn French, and I crushed that false belief.

The languages I’m learning:

I’m still spending time with the French language by watching movies, reading books, and speaking with friends in French so that I don’t forget the language. It’s also very useful to me as I spend a lot of time exploring France. I need the language to order food, talk with friends, and enjoy French culture. On top of this, I have also decided to learn Spanish and Japanese. I have very strong motivations to learn both of these languages. My fiance is Japanese, and I would love to be able to communicate with both him and his family in Japanese one day. It is my dream! I don’t know how long it will take me to achieve this dream, but I’m sure I’ll get there one day. I am also learning Spanish because my younger brother’s girlfriend is Mexican. I want to be able to speak with everyone when I go to Mexico with them one day! We have been planning this vacation for a while, and I can’t wait until it’s safer to travel again!

Challenge yourself!

Don’t let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do. There were people telling me that I couldn’t learn French. Not because they’re mean or want me to fail, just because they didn’t believe in that possibility! Just because someone has a belief for their life doesn’t mean you have to adapt it for your own. What languages would you learn if there weren’t any limits? I have so many that I want to learn after I master my current target languages. I think I will always want to learn more.
