Why I Am Staying With Medium After a Two-Year Courtship

And I hope you will too

Yes Medium, yes I accept your rose. Even if it is not a yellow rose, which is actually my favorite, I will stick around!

Did you get the email for the survey? If not, Medium sent a survey recently, and it seems like they are looking at the competition and want to do right by the writers here. Does Twitter offer any kind of financial stuff? I am not aware of that but; I do not post on Twitter enough to do the research. Someone else can enlighten me.

I joined Medium in May 2019. I quickly fell in love, as I do. And I have made a lot of mistakes. But I realized quickly it would be better to roll with the changes, like in any relationship. I was bummed about some of the MPP changes about 6 months in, because my main writing is poetry. Literary work has a huge following on Medium, and I still believe that will grow. At any rate, this platform has been nothing but a supportive, creative space where I can experiment and grow.

Here are the main reasons I am sticking around:

Community

This was the biggest surprise to joining this platform. I have met the writing group I have always wanted. I feel at home within my publications. I enjoy meeting creative people and learning from others’ viewpoints. I enjoy reading on the platform, and I have learned so much about publishing, editing, and blogging through Medium.

Earning Potential

We all know there is earning potential, and we all have to figure out how to tap into this offering. Our membership gives us so much more than a kickback for helping the platform grow. I appreciate any royalties I get from people reading my words.

Learning Writing Craft

There are some really excellent writers here who will show you how to do pretty much anything with your writing. As a long-time English/Language Arts teacher, I love books, authors, and writing. I always have. Medium gives writers a chance to experiment with writing, and we have an unlimited amount of inspiration all in one place.

So yes, I love Medium. Is the relationship perfect? Hardly, but I came to Medium with an open mind. People have some negative thoughts (honestly, about anything that doesn’t go their way or give them something they think they deserve), but I do not take part in the politics of writing online. I get enough of my drama fix from teaching eleven-year-olds daily.

If you are reading this (thank you), I hope you will stick around too. It’s bound to be an adventure.
