Why Does Monday Feel So Heavy?
The Universal “Ugh”: Our Collective Disdain for Monday
If you’re like me, the dawn of a new week doesn’t always greet you with the promise of fresh opportunities or inspirations.
Sometimes it feels like a bag of bricks on your shoulders, as if the weekend never happened, or it was just a blip, a brief respite from the ‘real world.’ And for what?
To dive back into the grind, the never-ending cycle of tasks, responsibilities, and expectations?
You know, for a while, I started dreading Sunday evenings because they were merely the opening act for Monday’s…
Time’s ticking, and Monday is that ever-persistent reminder.
But you know what? It doesn’t have to be this way. The simple act of being aware that we’re feeling this way can be the first step in transforming it.
You can’t change what you’re not aware of, right?
Rewriting the Monday Narrative: A Fresh Take on a Tired Day
Sometimes, the key to change isn’t some big, sweeping action but a subtle shift in perspective.
Imagine what could happen if we reframed Mondays not as a burden, but as a fresh canvas, a new chapter? Could that lift some of the weight?
For me, when I reframe my thinking to: “I get to see my work colleagues again, can listen to inspiring music while working, and drink a good-smelling cup of coffee,” it feels lighter.
The problem is that we overload our brain by thinking of the “whole” heavy week ahead of us, without focusing on what’s right here, right now.
We often don’t think in smaller chunks, but sometimes we think and feel way too much into the future!
This doesn’t mean that everything is now perfect and fine, freeing you from all the stress and negativity that sometimes exists in your work life.
Sometimes it really means you need to change something in your work life, your personal life, or both.
In some cases, it even means changing your career, switching who you work for, or asking for something you’ve wanted but didn’t ask for due to fear of what others might think of you.
Turning the Page: Why This Monday Could Be Different
So next time Monday rolls around, and you’re feeling that familiar tug of dread, remember that you’re not alone.
We’re all carrying some version of that Monday weight, but it’s not written in stone.
With a small shift in our minds, we can start to see it differently. I’m trying it, and I invite you to as well.
Who knows? We might just start looking forward to Mondays.
