Summary

Medium has updated its monetization policy to require writers to have at least 100 followers before they can earn money from their content.

Abstract

Previously, Medium allowed any writer to earn money by publishing behind a paywall, regardless of their follower count. However, Medium has recently implemented a new rule where writers must have a minimum of 100 followers to be eligible for payment. This change has sparked questions about the rationale behind the specific number of followers required, with the platform's rules being subject to frequent changes and not always consistent or logical. The article suggests that these changes are a result of Medium's unique position in the content platform space and the fact that it is being shaped by its founder, Ev Williams, in an iterative and sometimes unpredictable manner. The author, Roz Warren, offers to help writers reach the 100-follower threshold by following them if they are close to meeting the requirement. Additionally, Warren promotes her services as a writing coach, emphasizing her experience with various publications.

Opinions

  • The author implies that Medium's rule changes can be arbitrary and are often implemented without a clear rationale, as exemplified by the new 100-follower requirement for monetization.
  • There is a sense of skepticism about the consistency and sensibility of Medium's rules, with the author humorously speculating about future, potentially more restrictive or eccentric rules.
  • The author expresses a degree of admiration for Ev Williams' experimental approach to building Medium, despite the challenges it poses for writers trying to navigate the platform's policies.
  • Roz Warren is supportive of fellow writers, offering to follow those who need additional followers to meet Medium's new requirement and promoting her services as a writing coach to help improve and publish their work.

Why Do You Need to Have 100 Followers to Make Money on Medium?

Well why not?

It used to be that any Medium writer who published their stuff behind the paywall got paid.

They wouldn’t get paid much. But if they had readers? Money would result.

Medium recently changed the rules. Now you can’t get paid unless you have 100 followers.

Why 100?

Why not 107?

Or 42?

Or 162.5?

Because those are the rules.

Medium is full of rules, and those rules are constantly changing.

It can be challenging to keep up.

But — it could be worse!

Tomorrow Medium could tell us that only writers with 100,000 followers can make money on Medium.

Or only blondes who write about bitcoin.

Or that Medium will only pay you if you write about wombats. Or only if you use the word jouska in your post.

The Rules of Medium don’t have to be consistent or make any sense.

And often they aren’t and they don’t.

Why? Because there’s just one dude ruling this kingdom — all hail Ev Williams! — and what he says, goes.

Medium is a fabulous place but there’s never been anything quite like it — and Ev is definitely building this airplane as he’s flying it.

I wish him all the best and hope that he manages to keep this thing aloft. Even if that means that he’s going to keep endlessly futzing with the rules.

Meanwhile, if you are a paying Medium member who needs an extra follower to help you get to that magic 100? Link to your Medium profile as a response to this post and I’ll follow you.
