Why Do Some Stories Do Better Than Others On Medium?

Is it out of our hands?

It’s the age-old questions of Medium that we have all been trying to crack for a very long time. Why do some stories that we publish do better than others? Besides the obvious reasons does it have to do with a combination of things, luck, or the algorithm?

I’ll be the first to admit I’ve spent hours analyzing my stats trying to come up with a common denominator of the most successful and least successful articles I’ve published on the platform. Every time I think I’ve cracked the code I come up short-handed or am completely wrong.

Luck

I do believe that some of it is simply luck similar to being in the right place at the right time. The algorithm may be looking for a gardening story at 4:00 PM on a Tuesday when you published it, and with that, the story gets the extra push it needs.

Contributing Factors

There are some contributing factors that also help your stories.

Followers- The more followers you have the more people are exposed to your stories and will read them.

Quality- This is an obvious one but the better quality of the article the better it does and gets promoted.

Publication- The publication you publish your story in does make a big difference and you can gain more or less exposure.

Just to name a few of the contributing factors to the success of a piece you have written and published on Medium which of course helps your stats.

It’s A Combination

While I would love to say I have it all figured out and it is hard work over luck, that’s just not the reality. I believe the reality of the matter is it’s a combination of luck, the algorithm, and the work you put into the story you are publishing.

We may never be able to completely figure out the algorithm but we can put in the work and produce our best articles while understanding all of the contributing factors including luck and find the best formula that works for us and our writing.
