Why You’re Not Meeting Your Goals

How many goals do you really accomplish out of those you so fervently create for yourself at the end of every month and year?

You start doing Yoga inspired by an internet fitness guru. You do it for a week and then you abandon it.

You start writing for 30 minutes daily because that’s what great writers tell you to do. You do it for two days, and then you abandon it.

You start following a diet prescribed by a nutritionist, follow it for a week and abandon it when you can no longer just stare at the junkies in your refrigerator.

You see, you start many things, hoping to get smashing, heroic results, and fail to march even half the way forward. Don’t worry. I’m not here to make you feel shitty about yourself. I’m here to tell you that I was no different till last year.

I started working out and quit within a week more times than I can count. I decided countless times to stop eating junk, and within two days, I ended up buying nachos loaded with cheese.

There are many such things I decided to do, but couldn’t even stick to for a week. If you’re anything like me, there is only one reason for these failed attempts at hitting our targets-

We believe that we are not doing it right. We believe there’s something more that we don’t know and hence we cannot achieve what we want. We are in constant search of some new trick, some easier way to achieve the same results. How stupidly wrong we are!

Here’s a simple truth- We often know everything there is to attain our goals. more often than others, there is no magic trick, no easier way to reach your goals.

The secret often lies in doing the same old things, only a bit longer. We often know everything we need to know, and yet we ignore the most boring thing everyone is raving about: Consistency.

Success is neither magical nor mysterious. Success is the natural consequence of consistently applying basic fundamentals — E. James Rohn

You can achieve a body like your favourite fitness guru, only if you did Yoga long enough.

You can become a prolific writer, only if you write daily for long enough.

You can be at the peak of your health, only if you follow the diet for long enough.

The answer you need often lies in doing what you’re already doing for long enough.

I realized this after trying out different techniques, and researching new ways to do the same thing- writing consistently. Not so surprisingly, every other writer I admired told one thing in million different ways-

Write daily.

So there was nothing new. I had exhausted my resources to know some other way that ‘works’. But, in reality, I was just finding a sneaky way out to avoid the boring stuff- To sit in front of the blank page and pour words- day in and day out.

Once I realized this, things changed. I started believing in the daily boring act of sitting in front of a blank document. I started believing that I knew everything I need to to become consistent online.

You see, there is nothing wrong with learning new stuff. In fact, the most intelligent people are never done learning. But if you’re not thorough with the basics, the new stuff is going to make little to no difference.

So here’s what I’m doing now, and I think you should, too:

Start with the basics.

Master consistency.

Figure out the do’s and don’ts on the way.

There is really no other magic trick to stick to a habit rather than doing it- day in and day out.
