Why Birds in My Area Have Taken Shelter in the Police Station
What we are doing to birds is quite shocking.

“Why are there no birds in this area?” I asked.
My friend said, “Don’t worry! They have taken shelter in the police station.”
This recent visit to my native village (Ashashuni, Satkhira) was quite shocking. I wanted to embrace nature with open arms escaping the concrete city for a few days — but got disappointed in the end.
What happened?
I found people cutting big trees, brick manufacturers destroying the sky, and rivers getting narrower every single day. I witnessed people being cruel to the wildlife around them for no reason.
When I went to the open field to see some birds in the afternoon, I found nothing — not even one bird of any kind.
It shocked me to the core.
I asked my friend about it, and he told me that the number of birds in this area dropped significantly in recent years for so many reasons. First, their habitats got destroyed for farming. Influenced people cut down big trees — where birds build nests.
Not only that, some greedy people hunt birds at night when everyone falls asleep.
According to Wildlife Conservation and Security Act 2012, killing, poaching, trading, and unauthorized farming of at least 578 bird species are prohibited in Bangladesh. But some greedy monsters just don’t get it. They want to eat everything beautiful in nature. Their stomachs are too big.
Seeing my sad face, my friend told me something very unusual. He said that now all the birds (especially the herons) have taken shelter in the police station a few kilometers away.
“Really!!!.” I was in utter disbelief.
Rapid urbanization is killing the birds in my country. In the name of infrastructural development, we are destroying bird’s habitats.
We are polluting our air with smoke, eating up our forests at random, and poisoning our water with toxic chemicals. We are ruining everything in nature only for our personal interest.
When farmers see birds landing on their cornfields, they drive them away or catch them with traps and kill them.
Finding no food, shelter, and safety, birds are vanishing away.
As we know, birds play a vital role in insect control, pollination, and seed dispersal — if they vanish away, it will severely impact the whole ecosystem.

Anyway, I visited the police station a few days later and found what my friend said was true.
Birds occupied every tree in the police station area; long-legged herons, long-necked herons, and many more. They seemed pretty happy being there.
I talked to a few people and they said this was the first time the birds came here. As nobody dares to disturb them in the police station area, the birds can live peacefully and populate.
I also saw some baskets up in the treetops provided by the police officers so that the birds could settle down there quickly.
If you are still reading this, you should know that the bird population is declining all around the globe.
The 2018 Global Report confirms that 40% of the world’s birds are in decline. So, it’s time for you to wake up and speak for birds.
You can play your part by doing the followings. It’s easy if you try.
- Don’t pollute your surroundings.
- Avoid single-use plastics.
- Plant more trees.
- Install small bird habitats around your home.
- Use natural pest control in your garden or farms.
- Reduce your carbon footprints.
- Raise awareness.
Make sure you are a kind human being who is no threat to the wildlife around you. Act before it’s too late.
