Why Are We So Attached to This Life?
…when every problem on earth comes from our attachment.
Learning to ‘let go’ is truly the most liberating thing we can ever do for ourselves.
- Letting go of attachment to ourselves, others and objects allows us to live more freely and concentrate our attention here in the present moment.
- We can create much more time and energy to do what we really want to do and achieve our goals if we are not constantly worrying about this or that which may happen in the future or punishing ourselves with guilt or remorse about something which happened in the past .
“…what I’m saying is, it would be wonderful if you could recognize that your own attachment is the cause of every single problem that you experience.
Problems with your husband, wife, children, society, authorities, everybody; having a bad reputation; your friends not liking you; people talking badly about you; your hating your teacher, your lama or your priest — all this truly comes from your own attachment. You check up.” — Lama Thubten Yeshe.
Not many people are willing to accept this or even analyse the way in which their ego gets so easily hurt.
Are you ready to ‘let go’ and gain liberation?
“Seeking the nature of attachment and realizing that all your pleasures and your life itself come from the kindness and effort of other sentient beings do not demand that you be a member of this religion or that. Dharma practice needs no partisanship: ‘I’m this; I’m that.’ Just do it; just realize.” — Lama Thubten Yeshe.
It all begins with the mistaken perception of ‘I’ which deludes us about our own importance and inflates the ego. Then comes attachment.
“We attach to things and invest them with meaning. When we do this we can’t yet disentangle from them, the involvement deepens and the mess gets worse and worse.” — Ajahn Chah.
Just for today try to:
- let go of ONE thing which you are holding on to
- do ONE kind thing for someone else, without thinking of how it affects you
- not wish to get anything or to be or become anything
- realise that this empty place of ‘letting go’ - this is where peace truly is; this is Nibbana

May this teaching move you forward with your practice leading you to truth and happiness free from suffering.
