Who Says Using Emojis in Articles is Un-Writerly?

I’ll use emojis as long as a pub has not specified against its usage

I have a conversational writing style. Readers seem to connect with the fact that I write the same way as I would when talking to a friend.

In my writing, I sometimes go through the entire spectrum of emotions while recounting my life experiences — lots of unapologetic drama in other words.

Oh, the drama! Source: Giphy

Perhaps that is the reason why I find these small digital images to be so handy and versatile.

Life for sure isn’t a bed of roses and I for one won’t paint a virtual picture about how wonderful my life is when it’s not. In the course of my journey, there has been a decent amount of heartache, tears, failures, and health issues. There has also been healing, love, and support from unlikely places.

Keeping it real over keeping it perfect, any day baby. That’s how I roll…

This is just me being me. Writing is the way I process and express my feelings. Incorporating Gifs and emojis into my post is an extension of my personality. They visually express what I’m feeling and yes, also help take the bite out of the cuss words I throw in on occasion.

On the other hand, there are the writers who like to stick to writerly rules of conduct where emojis 😎 and fun Gifs have no place.

And they’re welcome to that. As my friend, Dr. Preeti Singh says “There is room for everyone on this platform.”

Now that I’m writing for medium-sized and big pubs, I find that I have to formal up — bow tie and coattails y’all but here’s the consolation: I nevertheless manage to sneak in my special brand of subtle sarcasm and self-deprecating humor😁

But at the end of the day, I find myself coming back to my go-to pubs, like Coffee Times, where I’m able to write what’s on my mind, have fun at the same time and here’s the icing on the cake — be a top writer for The Coffee Times Movement 🧁

Coffee Times Movement Medium page

Here’s an excerpt from the chief-editor, Winston’s article about how this came about — “Medium has created a unique page for our publication. You can see how our publication is performing on the Medium Topic page; What are the articles that are trending/latest/best in our publication, the number of stories we have published, the number of active writers, and our top writers. We are the only publication on Medium that offers such a page view unique to our publication.

He also adds that due to the fact that the pub has not garnered enough volume, Medium cannot officially acknowledge the top writer's achievement at this time. However, it can be attained as more writers continue to use the unique Coffee Times Movement tag.

I invite you to be part of this movement if you aren’t already.

Shout outs to my fellow writers who make splendid use of emojis Kristina God and Ching Ching.

I would like to share Jill (Conquering Cognitions)’s wonderful article “We See Things More Clearly When We Stand in Another’s Shoes.”
