Prompt / The Frosty Wars: Snowmen Amok

Where was the Snow?

a poem of memories unmade

There was that time it snowed, a Florida winter day, the air colder than the ground, you ran outside, barefoot in pajamas, catching ice crystals on your tongues before they melted in their downward descent, not enough for a ball, much less a snowman.

I wanted to take you to the Georgia mountains when snow was falling, we’d stay in a cabin, have snowball fights, build snowmen, do the winter stuff we couldn’t here.

But, I worked too much in the winter, couldn’t be spontaneous, another plan melting like snow in Florida sun.

Now you live far away where snowballs are thrown, sleds are ridden and snowmen stand as tall as you are now.

Photos in texts — my fingers can’t feel the cold, my ears can’t hear the laughter, I only see what isn’t here.

I don’t miss cold or snow or even snowmen —

I do miss you and all the memories unmade.

Thank you James Finn for this wintry prompt:

And, I love Elsa and her slightly inappropriate snowman. Cats always take credit for the good stuff.
