Where Are The Male Prostitutes?
Women seem to be much more successful in this business than men. Why is that?
“Mum, why are there only female prostitutes?”
This is what a friend of mine asked his mother at the age of 10 when while I was at his house.
“I guess there are some male ones too. But there are certainly more female ones. Probably men need more attention.”
His mother answered.
An Economic Redundancy Undercut By Eager Amateur Competition
I don’t think anyone will deny that there are more female prostitutes. Of the comparatively few male ones, many probably also serve homosexual men.
Why is that? If there was a higher demand from heterosexual women, there would probably also be a higher supply.
So the real question is: why do men pay for sex and women don’t?
The simple and short answer is: because they don’t have to. A woman who wants casual sex gets it with a very high probability. For men, especially if they are not extremely attractive, this endeavor is more difficult.
A famous study showed this impressively. On a university campus, people were asked about casual sex. While the majority of men agreed, all women declined the offer.
So it can be said that men have a significantly higher interest in casual sex than women. On the one hand, it can be argued that women are more selective for evolutionary reasons. Their mating strategy is designed to find the best partner because they have to invest a lot of time, energy, and resources in a pregnancy. Knowing about the risks of STDs and unwanted pregnancies further discourages them from casual sex.
From a purely biological perspective, it makes more sense for men to rely on quantity to pass on their genes. Evolutionary psychologists say that this is why the desire for casual sex has evolved more in men.
The sociologist Pierre van den Bergh summed it up perfectly by saying:
The male prostitute, unless he caters the homosexuals, is an economic redundancy, constantly undercut by eager amateur competition
Ein weiteres passendes Zitat, welches Steve Stewart-Williams in diesem Kontext in seinem Buch “The Ape That Understood The Universe” ist das folgende von der Feministin Andrea Dworkin:
A man wants what a woman has — sex. He can steal it (rape), persuade her to give it away (seduction), rent it (prostitution), lease it over the long term (marriage in the United States) or own it outright (marriages in most societies).
