Summary

Rasheed Hooda recounts his journey on Route 66, emphasizing the importance of following one's inner guidance and the joy of unexpected encounters and scenery.

Abstract

Rasheed Hooda's narrative of his walk on Route 66 is a testament to the value of trusting one's instincts over relying solely on technology like GoogleMaps. Despite the challenges of the route, he found beauty and serendipity in the detours, which led to a chance meeting with Mike and Angela, who became new friends and provided him with a memorable meal. Hooda reflects on the kindness of strangers and the shared humanity that connects us all, regardless of background. His journey also resulted in a significant increase in his social media following, with nearly 500 new connections made on the road. The experience reinforces his belief in the oneness of humanity, as mentioned in the Holy Qur'an, and the idea that all people are fundamentally the same.

WALKING ROUTE 66

When You Get Fabulous Guidance From Within

When I looked at the GoogleMaps, it recommended taking local Hwy P, but, that’s not Route 66. Sure, it would cut the walking by more than a mile, but, that’ was not my mission.

In about an hour or so I realized why google was recommending the alternate. Hwy 17, aka Historic Route 66, is like a rollercoaster. I trusted my inner self to guide through it, and I was surprised when a mix up in reading road signs had me continue on Hwy 17 when I was to turn on Hwy AB.

When I realized that I was going in the wrong direction, I consulted the GPS on my phone. It showed me an alternate route, instead of turning around. I was treated to some gorgeous scenery along a dirt road, and when I emerged from the woods, I saw what I had missed by getting mixed up. (See the featured image above).

Delighted by the inner guidance, once again.

When I finally pulled into the parking lot of the Oasis Travel Plaza, my destination for the day, someone greeted me in the parking lot with “You’ve done some walking today.”

Mike had seen me the evening before in St. Robert, as I was headed toward Waynesville. He walked back with me into the restaurant and introduced me to his wife Angela. He said he was buying lunch, and recommended the Rueben Sandwich.

Most restaurants don’t know how to make a Rueben correctly. When done right, it is divine. Mike told me he decides the worthiness of a town based on the quality of their Rueben Sandwiches. This place definitely had one of th best ones I’ve had in years.

We ate and talked for a good while. Mike is a Jack of many trades, and Angela is a librarian who works in Waynesville. They have four daughters, the oldest one ready to fly the coup.

After they left, I stayed in the restaurant to catch up on my blog, and social posts. I had some pie and coffee for dinner and then headed to get the laundry done at the truck stop, and that’s where I spent the night.

As I think back and ponder.

Mike told me that he believes there are no strangers, only friends you haven’t met yet, and I agree. I came to meet many new friends while walking route 66. I added almost 500 new Facebook friends/followers, people I met on the road. A majority with whom I still keep in touch.

I learned throughout my journey that people are the same regardless of class, creed, or location. Deep down inside we are all the same.

“God created all of you from a single soul,” says the Holy Qur’an.

Y’all stay blessed and be happy, you heah?
