When the Hardest Thing in the World is Simply Being You
What you’re losing by not letting go

I hate my freckles. I hate the new wrinkles I see under my eyes. I hate the white spots on my face that the doctors are saying aren’t going away.
And in the morning, I slather on so many products you’d think I’d look like Kim Kardashian.
But I never do.
Instead, I look like a forty-nine-year-old woman trying too hard (which I am).
Every day, I wonder what it’d be like to just love myself the way I am.
I daydream what it’d be like not to use two pounds of concealer every morning. I fantasize about what it’d be like to eat the cheeseburger and just not give a damn how many calories it had. I dream of just not pushing so hard to prove myself.
As a matter of fact, my greatest aspiration in life is to one day be able to exhale. To let it all go and accept me for me.
But I’m not brave enough to do it.
And I need to be. You need to be too.
We’ve got to stop being afraid of living life the way it’s really meant to be lived. We got to set down the heavy baggage that comes from continually fighting to gain validation.
Because the truth is that life is flying by.
And by refusing to love ourselves as we are, we’re missing out on so many things.
We’re missing out on the warmth of the sun on our naked skin. We’re missing out on the joy of spending time with children or family who love us just as we are. We’re missing out on the magic in life by trying to prove ourselves to people who could give a damn about us.
And it’s tragic.
So let’s exhale together. Just for today.
Let’s dare ourselves to do the very thing we need to do.
Let’s free ourselves. Let’s stop trying and pretending. Let’s look in the mirror and say, “It’s time to be me, to do what I want, and say what I need to say. It’s time to eat the ice cream and not feel guilty and time to stop trying to prove to the world that I’m worth something.”
It’s time for us to know we’re enough. Because we are.
And it’s time to really believe it.
