When it Comes to YouTube
I’m Still Figuring Out My Niche! (Part 1 of 2)
Below is a post I initially wrote on my YouTube Channel. It follows on from a comment I made in yesterday's YouTube-related story (about how I received a mention in a big YouTuber’s video! 😁)
I Need to Niche Down
If I want to grow more rapidly on YouTube and have hope of doing this for a living, even if only part-time, I need to niche out more! People advise this all the time! This is something that I have struggled with, however.
Like the seasons and the tides, my hobbies and interests come and go. I have always had a variety is the spice of life mentality, and have been a Jack of all trades, but master of none kind of person.
This is all fine and dandy when it comes to how one wants to live their life, but it’s not wise where growing a YouTube Channel is concerned! Sure, there are some YouTubers who can Vlog about anything under the sun, but for the majority of us, that isn’t the way to become a successful YouTuber.
That said, I have heard whispers lately that old-school Vlogging is becoming popular on YouTube again! Even if so, niching down can still help give our channels a boost, where the algorithm is concerned!
Why Nich’ing Down Works
One of the reasons Niching Down works on YouTube is because viewers often search for specific “How to” videos or specific topics of interest. The more quality videos a channel makes under a specific niche, the more the algorithm will reward that YouTuber by pushing out more of their content to the right, niche-focused audience.
I believe that the reason not many of my subscribers see my videos is because they subscribed to me for my hula hooping or art videos etc. These were niches I experimented with in the past but I decided not to continue with them long-term.
YouTube will only push my videos out to these old subscribers if they relate to these topics, or if they have the bell notification switched on, which, let’s be honest… not many people do! Myself included.
Figuring Out My Niche
Over the years, I have tried to get clear on my niche, but I have been too indecisive and haven’t fully committed myself to just one topic of interest. Up until now, my way of finding my way has been through the process of elimination/trial and error.
If a video ranks well and I enjoy making that type of content, great, I will make more videos like it! If it doesn’t, or if I don’t enjoy making those types of videos long-term… I wave goodbye to this topic.
I don’t mind that I took the long, rocky and winded road when it comes to YouTube, I have still learnt a lot along the way, both about myself and also about creating videos in general.
Doing What I Love vs What The Algorithm Loves
I’m glad that I haven’t stuck to a niche just because it was doing well. I would be selling my soul to the algorithm if I did that! I only want to create videos on a niche for as long as I am genuinely interested in that topic.
Maybe that’s not the smartest business move, but it’s the right move for me. I believe that making content you are passionate about is more important than sticking to one topic, regardless of how well it’s been working for you.
Passion shines through! You can tell when people are creating videos on topics that they love, versus topics that they are sick to death of speaking about. I think, after all of these years of trial and error, I have finally found those few special niches that I won’t tire of speaking about any time soon!
What is my Niche?
So what is the future of Simply Nobel? Well, after my random A — Z Vlogging Challenge, I see this channel as being focused primarily on clean green living and on improving our motivation and health.
Time will tell whether I will need to narrow it down further. The other possibility is that my new channel, Heidi’s Hobbies will become my new primary focus. I would love to cover all of my hobbies on there 😅 But that would likely not be wise.
One of these two channels will be my casual “just for fun” channel, and the other will become my “big girl pants” channel. Please bear with me while I continue to slowly but surely, find what works best for both my audience and for me 😊
Conclusion
In some ways, narrowing down on a niche (or two or three, but on different channels, lol) will be good for me. I often find that if I have too many creative ideas, I struggle to pick just one and I wind up procrastinating my days away! Time to simplify and focus on one thing at a time 🙂
Let’s see what happens in the coming weeks and months! Maybe YouTube will surprise me and push through a bunch of random videos! Not sure if that would help simplify things though! 😅
Thanks for being on this creative journey with me! I hope that you will enjoy it and be happy with however things transpire 😊
