When does a Story transform into a Poem?

When it is Narrative Poetry based on stories you enjoy

Narrative Poetry is when a story is told in the form of a poem. There is freedom in the composition of a narrative poem. It is usually written in metered verse. These poems do not need to rhyme. The poem could be short or long and the ideas could be simple or complex, depending on the poet writing the narrative poem.

I enjoy writing narrative poems and I have written quite a number over the last few weeks on Medium. I have written these poems based on stories I have heard, enjoyed, and those which are memorable to me.

I enjoyed “Assassin Creed” the movie, the game, and the graphic novel. Based on the idea of the Assassin, I created a poem called “Assassin’s Greed”, about an Assassin called Diamond Blade, who wants to win the ultimate prize, the gift of immortality.

Doctor Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme, from the comic books, was my inspiration for the poem, “The Mystical Mandarin”. The Mandarin is an orphan, who is taught the magical arts and is later transformed into the mystical Mandarin, a being who commands nature and possesses great supernatural powers. The Mandarin is here to save humanity from evil forces.

My poem “Scheherazade’s 1001 Arabian Tales” was inspired by the story from the Arabian nights, about an intelligent young girl, who saves herself from getting beheaded by a tyrant of a King. The story is about a King who would marry a new girl every day and behead her the next morning. The young and beautiful Scheherazade devises a clever plan to save her life and the lives of all the other girls in the kingdom.

“Robin Hood King of Thieves”, the poem was inspired by the stories of Robin Hood. I enjoy watching all the versions of Robin Hood movies, from the one with Errol Flynn to the latest movie with Taron Egerton. I thoroughly enjoy the exploits of this bandit and his cunning plans to outwit and outfox the evil Sheriff of Nottingham.

“The Werewolf in the Pale Moonlight”, is a narrative poem, about a man who is bitten by a werewolf. He later has the ability to transform into a werewolf. It is only after he learns to control his transformation, can he save his town from the zombies, vampires, and the undead who want to destroy it.

“Sons and Daughters of Icarus”, is the poem I composed inspired by the story of Icarus, who flew too close to the Sun. The wings were created by his father. The wings melted and Icarus fell into the sea to his death.

A narrative poem, puts the most interesting parts of a story together, making it an imaginative, visual, and literary feast for the reader.
