What’s Your Story, Morning Glory?
This title came to mind with a quickness, and come to find out that “morning glory” is slang for a man’s morning erection. Huh, you learn something new every day! Although this piece has little to do with anything phallic-related, I decided it was enough of an attention grabber to keep it. How did I do? And since I’m not entirely convinced there is any sort of smooth transition from morning wood into answering Lucy Dan’s ‘May Interview Questions,’ I’m going to dive right in and hope that you’ll follow along with me.
May Interview Questions and Responses:
[1] What did you like to do most when you were 10? They say that this hobby is likely what brings you the most joy in life — is this something you still do?
I wish I could say, “rock out on my guitar!” But at ten years old, I was one year shy of dipping my toes into the vast, wonderful waters of learning how to play an instrument. So, what else was there to do with my free time? Rollerblade! If I wasn’t skating, I was swimming, playing basketball, or riding my bike. It’s been about ten years since I’ve strapped on a pair of rollerblades, but I do have grandiose ideas of rallying all the neighborhood moms together and playing a basketball scrimmage in booty shorts and a pair of Nikes.
Swoosh!
As for riding my bike, I suppose that’s the true answer to this question. Except at thirty-eight, we call it “cycling.” Thinking about life and reevaluating my place in this world while spinning my wheels for miles at a time is a true joy (and my saving grace.)
[2] What genres do you write? Why do you choose to write with these types of structures? What’s attractive about them?
“Let’s talk about sex, baby Let’s talk about you and me Let’s talk about all the good things And the bad things that may be.” — Salt-N-Pepa
I write whatever is on my mind and in my heart. Usually, those topics are a mixture of deep thoughts of the following: sexuality, love, and relationships, working out/fitness, parenting, humor, life lessons, music, pain, pleasure, marriage, and divorce. Selfishly, writing about these subjects helps me heal my heart and mind (and yes, you guessed it, become a better version of me.) Unselfishly, my ultimate goal is to connect with other humans and spread that love and healing worldwide. Or, at the very least, put a damn smile on your face.
[3] What’s your all-time favorite childhood TV show?
Out Of This World, starring Maureen Flannigan as “Evie.” I can’t say it was my favorite but one of the most influential by far. I often daydreamt about putting my hands together and freezing the world as I knew it, then putting my two index fingers together to unfreeze everyone and everything when I was good and ready to, damn it.
[4] Pick one sense and tell us about the most relaxing thing you do in relation to that sense.
This one was a toss-up between the sense of hearing and touch. Since I’m sticking to a G-rating (okay, maybe PG, if you want to get technical), the most relaxing thing I do with those two senses is play my guitar. I had a hard time choosing between hearing myself make music and feeling it in my bones and down to my very core. Feeling those nylon (or sometimes steel) strings on my fingertips is just as stimulating as hearing a song I just wrote.
[5] Who is someone you want to connect more with this month? How might you go about doing this?
I feel like such a nerd saying this, but — myself. I’ve been so focused on other people's timelines that I didn’t realize how disconnected I was with what makes me tick. I will go about reconnecting with myself by writing, hiking, laughing, loving, sweating, crying, and responding to ingenious and enjoyable Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) prompts like this one.
