What You Need To Know About The ASCP Exam

Some tips and a little advice if you are an MLS/CLS/MT

Photo by Katerina Holmes from Pexels

American Society for Clinical Pathology administers a board exam that certifies professionals in the field of pathology such as medical laboratory scientists, medical technologists, HLA specialists, and others. The passing of this exam is a huge milestone to achieve with guaranteed benefits in moving up the career ladder, better, pay, and ease of employment worldwide. It also adds credentials to your name as (ASCP) which shows you are knowledgeable in the field you took the exam in.

Where can you take it?

The ASCP exam can be taken in all 50 US states currently plus 30 other countries such as Canada, Thailand, Jamaica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Philippines, etc. I know what you are thinking and yes you can take your exam at your favorite holiday/vacation destination if you want.

When to take it?

ASCP exam is a pretty comprehensive one with 100 questions to be taken in 2 and 1/2 hours (2hrs 30 minutes) at the site of your selection.

The best time to take the exam is when the information is still fresh from lectures or classes and when you are feeling confident that you have studied and know enough content to pass it. The good news is the passing score is 400 out of 1000.

What you will be tested on?

You will be tested in microbiology, chemistry, hematology, blood bank/immunohematology, lab management, immunology/serology, probably some genetics, and molecular diagnostics (futuristic stuff).

Everyone will get a different combination of questions and it will be disproportionate depending on how well you answer the questions from each section. The areas you answer worse in might pop up more frequently than the ones you answer better in (just a tip).

Set up of exam center

Since I took my exam during the Covid-19 pandemic, certain protocols were in places such as washing your hands and mask-wearing. At the time of writing this article, I am not sure what the protocols are currently.

When I entered the exam center, they told me no phones allowed, no watches, and no electronic devices. You can bring your calculator inside but it can’t be like the graphing calculators or computerized. Just your handy simple solar Texas instrument calculator. If you don’t have one, then they’ll give you one. All you need to bring is yourself.

A sketch board will be provided as well to work out equations. The only catch is you can’t write down anything on the board before the exam starts.

Could you please give me study tips?

Absolutely. My study method involved the purple and yellow book (Clinical Laboratory Science Review: A Bottom Line Approach), my notes from MLS classes/handouts, and Lab CE.

The truth is all the above things I’ve mentioned will help. However, from experience, you want to use Lab CE, notes, yellow and purple book as well the ASCP BOC study guide. I know it’s expensive but it will increase your chances of passing tremendously.

Strategies

Take the 25 question test every day, 50 question test every week, and the 100 questions exam at least once a week in Lab CE. Make sure to write down every wrong question and its answer in a notebook or on your tablet. Review these written down notes every day.

On top of Lab CE practices, you also want to use the ASCP BOC Exam Study Guide to further get acquainted with the type of questions they’ll ask in the exam. The more you get familiar with the exam questions the better it is for you.
