What to Know About Sitting to Burn Calories
Is prolonged sitting good for your health?

As a writer, one of my biggest fears is the effect of prolonged sitting. I made a routine to write 8 hours every day, taking an hour rest after four hours. During my rest time, I either stretch, meditate or go for a walk.
Most authors write between four and eight hours a day. Sometimes twelve hours if it’s a deadline. And when we are not writing, we are reading. Although, audiobooks have made it easy for writers to read while doing other things standing. Aside from writers, tech guys spend more time sitting than standing.
One survey found, 27% of tech professionals said they work five to six hours a day, and 11% reported only working one to two hours per day. In contrast, 30% said they work between seven and 10 hours per day.
While office workers spend a minimum of two hours on their feet at work. Researchers discovered that office workers spend 65% to 75% of their working hours sitting.
According to experts, those who sit down for a long period are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease and have a 13% increased risk of cancer.
Another study one study suggested that, for those sitting more than seven hours a day, there is a 5% increased risk of premature death with each additional hour off their feet.
Reading about these stats scares me. I don’t want to die from doing what I love the most. Writing is my passion. To think I put my health in danger every single day makes me panic.
But it turns out that sitting is not all that bad. Despite the warnings from some experts, some medical professionals have a different opinion, that sitting can indeed help to keep off fat from our body since it’s a form of exercise.
Why sitting too much is recommended by experts
While your job, TV habits, or schoolwork can get in the way of some of your activities, there are steps you can take to make your waistline smaller and maintain a healthy body, even while sitting on a pillow.
You don’t always have to eat salads or restrict your diet to lose weight. By adopting healthy habits that boost your metabolism, increase calorie consumption, and prevent overeating, you can still lose weight while sitting.
If you want to lose weight but don’t have time to hit the gym, you can replace the chair with a yoga ball to speed up your calorie burn.
A sports dietitian says, replacing your chair to sit on a sports ball can help you burn an extra 100 calories a day. If you work 300 days in a year, that could add up to melting away 8.5 pounds.
In that case, a 150 lb person is estimated to burn 68 calories an hour sitting quietly, 102 calories doing light work, and 170 calories while doing moderate work.
Calories burned while sitting varies greatly on factors such as weight, fitness level, age, sex, and health status. But the more active you are, you will burn more calories while seated.
Parting words
By replacing the desk chair with a stability ball, you can strengthen your core, back, and legs while burning more calories.
And if you don’t want to use a yoga ball, just opt for a massaging chair and sit in it for an hour every day.
From my experience with weight loss, I realized that you could achieve anything you want with a healthy routine in place.
However, you shouldn’t ignore the dangers of excessive sitting. Reducing the number of sitting hours per day for standing more can help prevent a number of common health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.
