What would you like me to write about?
I brainstormed 50 new writing topics. So, dear readers, what would you like to read next?
There’s no such thing as an aspiring writer.
Once an aspiring writer puts the pen to the paper, they’re just a writer. Maybe not a good one yet, but a writer nonetheless. Everything after that is just part of the process.
I’ve written a lot over the last few years. Most of it is sports, with pop culture and humor sprinkled in with life at large. That’s not going anywhere. But I want to continue growing as a writer, write new things, explore new ground.
And I’d like you to help me figure out which ground to explore next.
A writer writes for his readers. So, dear readers, what would you like to read next? What stories have I done that interest you or led you to follow my work? And where would you like me to go next as a writer?
I spent some time brainstorming ideas below. Which ones interest you most? Point me in the direction of what you’d like to read…
Highlight your favorite idea below and/or leave a comment at the bottom with your pick(s). Your original ideas are welcome too!!
Something in sports, but different than my usual stuff
- Tell a story in sports, less about the games, more about the people
- Sport as a vehicle for some bigger cultural story
- Review a sports movie or a book or biography
- Sports humor, parody, or satire
- Sports history / Remember when… / This day in sports history
- Stories about a sports writer or someone in sports media
- More about soccer, baseball, hockey, etc one of the other major sports
- Watch a new or unusual sport and write something about it
- Sports fiction
TV, movies, books, podcasts, & culture
- Brief review of a book I read, movie I watched, etc
- Preview new TV shows coming soon or just launched
- Check in on a show you may have missed and whether you should watch it
- Check in and review a podcast and recommend a specific episode
- Review something from HBO / Showtime / Netflix / Hulu etc to see if it’s worth paying for a subscription
Draft things from life like a fantasy draft
- Similar to the Thanksgiving Draft I did, rank and draft things like sandwiches, Disney songs, the 90s, sports mascot death match, etc
- Collaborate with other friends and writers (*cough* serge *cough*)
- Turn some drafts into audio podcasts
- Drafts could be serious rankings or, more likely, witty and/or sarcastic
March Madness bracket with things from life to pick a winner
- Similar to the draft above, pick a bunch of things from a topic like NBA nicknames and pick winners round by round until a champ is crowned
- Interactive bracket with polls so readers can vote for winners
- Collaborate and/or turn some brackets into podcasts
We Watched It So You Didn’t Have To
- Watch an entire sports game and report on the details of what I saw on player development and where the team is at, for fans who don’t get to watch every game or see every team
- Could also work for live sporting events, same concept
- Similar concept but checking in on a TV show or maybe a one-off special or movie, what I saw, and if it was worth watching

Brandon Anderson, Sports Consultant MD
- “How I’d Fix It” series on moves I’d make, trades I’d consider, strategy I’d change, etc to “fix” a particular sports team or player going forward
- Pick a dumb rule in sports and imagine how I’d fix it
- Analyze strategy in a key game or over time by one team / coach
- This is basically a Venn diagram of where my brain is at in life between watching sports, writing, and consulting (aka fixing things)
Something about my Christian faith
- My personal faith journey and things I’m thinking through
- Exegesis of a specific interesting Bible passage (put that Masters to use!)
- My church journey or recent church experiences
- Children’s ministry or serving in the church
- Things I’m struggling with or don’t understand in my faith
Write about writing
- The actual creative writing process
- The freelance part of writing, finding work, getting paid, networking, etc
- Medium tips and tricks I’ve used to gain exposure and followers and become a top writer in 10+ different categories
- Editing tips and writing nitty-gritty
Another sort of writing
- Brief journal / blog thoughts of the day
- Poetry — used to dabble in poetry in high school and college
- Fiction — wrote a lot of fiction as a kid, not as much lately
- Humor or satire (think The Onion?)
Pick someone ordinary and tell their story
- Sit down with a friend or acquaintance and “interview” them and find a story to tell about everyday people
- Tell the story of a fellow Medium writer or a social media friend
Pick a random topic and find a story
- Use a writing prompt from the 642 Things to Write About book my sister Brianne Anderson gave me
- Use Wiki:Random to pick a completely random topic on Wikipedia and use it to find and tell a story
- Respond to another Medium story or article
Something with trivia
- I go to pub trivia nights and have been part of online trivia groups and contests, so… some sort of brief trivia game or Did You Know or etc?
- Sports-specific trivia
A piece with links to best reads of the week / month
- Three to five articles I read that week and a paragraph or two of why they stood out to me and are worth reading
- Alternatively, skip the analysis and just compile some of the best links of the week for readers
