7 or more tips to publish a good story

I am still a work in progress. As a new writer, Newsbreak gives me a warm time. It makes me question my abilities.

I started writing on the platform in November 2021.

I had a good run. And I amassed the 100 registered members needed to get monetized. Which led me to publish this story:

But my site analytics have always left me pondering two questions:

  • Do I write on topics people care about much?
  • Do my headlines give people the urge to click?

Looking at my NewsBreak insight dashboard makes me feel embarrassed. So many impressions, so few views.

I assume most people see the stories on their feeds. But they don’t choose to click on them. This reflection has led me to reflect on my writing and the advice I have read in the past.

Backstory: Studying Success

When an article goes viral, creators review the post. It’s a common practice here. And it is a culture I have taken part in as well.

A story went viral. The author, Peter White, highlighted his success. Then I did a review myself to see what I could learn and share with other writers here.

I used the tips to guide me. I enjoyed some success for personal blogging.

But journalism writing is one big natural scenery jigsaw puzzle I am yet to crack.

A Comforting Realization

The problem of low views is not unique to me. But it is also not a problem for some other writers.

This statistic of mine is unsettling.

I mean, even Newsbreak tried to help me out with feedback about changing my title. But thankfully, other writers share their stories and I feel less alone in my predicament.

As writers, we want more. I understand you might feel hatred towards the reach of your content. But here is a silver lining. If the people who see your stories choose to read them, you are already doing something right.

What matters to readers?

  1. Readers will always care about facts that make them more attractive or improves their living conditions. This interest gives some topics a natural edge:
  • money/finance/career
  • relationship/man and woman stories
  • health and beauty
  • personal development
  • trends: celebrities/fashion/technology

2. Readers keep consuming content because the text appears easy to read. Plus, each new sentence delivers different information.

3. The article’s tone makes said reader feel an emotion. PS. I love how Tim uses adjectives in unexpected places. For example, he says stupid simple tips or gorgeous brain.

4. But all writing tips don’t matter if:

  • the headline is weak
  • your positioning of the topic is boring

Headlines are 99% the reason people click.

But very little clout and poor positioning can kill good headlines. For instance, if a big news media house and I share a similar story, mine becomes irrelevant.

Thank you for reading!
