What It Means To Write From The Heart And How To Try It Yourself

The secret is in the vicinity of your actual heart. At least it feels that way.

When you finally begin the task of creating a new story, whether its a one-pager or a novel there are going to be times when you feel uninspired and lifeless with your words. It happens.

Then there are times when you will feel a radiant warmth as you start to allow yourself to open up to the topic in front of you. The warmth I am describing is emotional. It is almost joyous in certain moments. It can also be overwhelming, sad, and dramatic sometimes. The sensation feels like a bubble of adrenaline in your chest area. It rises up and sometimes comes with tears. This is a moment to tune in to your mind and follow your words where they take you.

The truly emotional writing experience brings transcendental waves through your mind and body. Sounds goofy right? I know. I am almost embarrassed to say these things — but when it happens the fluidity of language starts to become life-changing for the writer and the reader.

Writing from the heart is not always needed to produce great work. But If you have never tapped into the message your mind and heart truly wants to put out into the world, you are missing out on a very special aspect of this chosen line of work (or hobby for some).

When I get the rising flutter I sometimes ignore it. I sometimes become too connected to the intangible strings that thread our lives together and I begin to feel like a nut.

Today while thinking about what words I should present to the friends I have made here on Medium, I felt that familiar wave of radiance and my heart told me that I should share this exact feeling to increase the potential for more of us to connect on a level that is not superficial. Our souls are not skin deep. Our hearts are inside our human bodies and our machine, our perfect human-machine has all the same parts as all the other humans. We are the same.

With so much turmoil and chaos in our lives, we deserve to rise up above all of the wounds and all of the flames of rioting rage. All of us. All tones of skin color, all makes and all models of human. We deserve to be free enough to speak from the heart instead of from the hurt.

We must mend the broken historical trust amongst our human race. It is long past its due date. I wanted to share how to connect with your higher inner sources for the sake of writing from a new place, mentally.

Try this exercise to begin the flow of words and thoughts. Write TO the words themselves. It is almost a letter or a call-to-action for your heroic self to speak through your fingertips, onto the keys. I actually start many of my stories with silly sentences like:

“These are the first words that came to be, for me today. I am feeling the warmth and it reminds me of lemonade in summertime swim parties. After these words, I will find more. Those words will lead me to some castles made of sand that will get washed into the sea eventually — as Jimi Hendrix sang in the song called Little Wing”.

Do you see anything sensible about that last paragraph? It is poetic nonsense and it is just a mood setter. The best-fitting parts of the English language are already in your mind, all you need is a jump-start and your work will become more truthful. It will be more powerful. Your work will be more enjoyable for you as you write and for your readers as they scroll through your stories.

Here is a story where I chose to “tap in” and I did not remove the brainstorm starter. It is a lovely story I think.

I invite the words to come dance around with the tips of my fingers as I tap out another crazy combination of thoughts to build on. Once you start to feel warmth in your fingers and you just allow sentences to write themselves — you will notice it. You will be channeling the juiciest language choices from the inner-you. The real you. The perfect, spectacular human that you are. Show us. I am certain we all have this ability to tap into our best selves.

Writing from the heart is more than just sappy love stories and cute remarks. Writing from the heart takes courage. I challenge you, whether you are a man or a woman, black or white, anyone in between also. Tap into something higher and put your heart into your work. You will get the hang of it.
