The secrets of the universe

What You And I Have In Common

Once we recognize it, we open the doors to unimaginable joy.

These words are coming to me in a strange way. I see them appearing on the screen because I am typing them. Something strange is happening to me at the moment as I tap away on the keyboard.

I feel that I am supposed to convey this message and that it will divinely reach the people who are meant to receive it.

I am floating in space. We all are. That is actually what our planet is doing. Suspended in orbit, the sun tugging on our center, rotating us all circle after circle, rotation after rotation.

We are a lucky species. The Earth is so precisely perfect in its measured quantities of water and crusts and metals and air. It is just the right ratio of “stuff” to make our species thrive. People are lucky.

The odds of all of the components existing in one beautiful ball, just far enough from the sun to sustain life are astronomically against us. But here we are.

People are lucky.

People get to experience the physical world through an intricate system of senses. We gather information about the stuff around us, our environment, based on how our senses collect the data.

We see, touch, hear, smell, and taste our world. The data collected is then sent through our nervous system where it is distributed to various channels and pathways in order to sort the information to help us survive.

Survival is not the only way that we use this information.

Instinct drives our existence both voluntarily and involuntarily. Things like blinking, breathing, flinching from pain are all examples of involuntary reactions we don’t totally control.

The machine that is our body runs pretty well without our input if you think about it. Right now as you read this you are staying alive because of the involuntary actions — millions of them happening right now.

You just computed the words you read in the previous sentence (hopefully) and simultaneously continued to breathe, blink, squirm, tap your foot, scratched an itch on your wrist, and thought about what you will have for a snack in an hour.

That is amazing! You did all of that again just while reading about it.

Beyond the complex workings of our auto-pilot (which is a marvelous wonder), we also have some control over the things that occur in our lives. The control we have over our lives isn’t much in comparison to what is not within our control. Even so, the portion of our existence that we decide on is important to us.

The control we have over our lives isn’t much in comparison to what is not within our control. Even so, the portion of our existence that we decide on is important to us.

We want more than just the basics.

We are beings that have grown to rely on a certain quality of life.

Air, food, water, safety, these are all essential to sustaining us. We want more than the basics. We don’t just want to be alive, but we want to live a good life.

Here are some of the ways we see, touch, hear, smell and taste the world and connect it to the part of us that we decide on

  • We see the stars, the galaxy, and the universe we are floating in and we become mystified.
  • We feel pleasure when our eyes fall upon a person we are in love with. We melt at the view of our children.
  • We enjoy the touch of soft fabrics, warm sunlight, and kisses.
  • We like to hear music, we talk in tones that convey moods to one another and we whisper secrets affectionately into our lover’s ears.
  • We breathe in the aroma of jasmine flowers, we love the smell of coffee roasting and nothing is as refreshing as the scent of rain.
  • We savor a variety of foods and we tease our taste buds with hot drinks and frozen treats.

All of the things that we do as humans are experienced through our senses. That includes all of the laughter and all of the joy, all of the empathy and hurt, all of the love and hate and war and fate and fear and peace and every single thing that happens.

Yes, all of it.

We experience the life we are living through our senses.

I am thankful right now that I am able to use all five senses. Not all people are able to enjoy the privilege of experiencing all five senses, so if you can see, touch, hear, smell, and taste things — you are one of the world’s fortunate people.

We interpret the physical world around us based on what we sense. This is how we navigate the variety of emotions and human connections we come across throughout our living years.

What we have in common is everything.

Look in the eyes of the people you meet, and what you have in common will be clear.

In yoga as a greeting, they say “Namaste” which translated from Hindi means “In your divine light, I see a divine reflection of me.” or “I bow to our mirrored divine light.”.

You don’t need to be into yoga or know foreign sayings to know the value in this greeting. Even at a distance, we can see this truth. What we have in common is everything.

Cheers.

What we have in common is everything.

Even at a distance, we can see this truth.

In you I see a reflection of me.
