What Does Working in Sleep-Deprivation Look Like?
You are not working anymore. You are just waiting for the day to end.
You realise the importance of an asset when you don’t have enough of it. The same thing happened to me today.
Since I am adding more activity in my morning routine, the schedule is disturbed nowadays because it is a little disorganised.
I write blogs around midnight nowadays. But, I want to return badly to the morning schedule.
4 hours of sleep is unhealthy for an average adult
The recommended sleep time is somewhere around 7–9 hours. No matter what is your lifestyle, 4 hours of sleep is still terrible for a normal human being.
Sometimes your day feels like a stretch. I mean, like, a lot. All you can think about is when the night will come, and you will recover your lost sleep. But sleep is not algebra, folks!
I am a morning person. I sleep by 10 PM. But nowadays the schedule stretches till 2 AM because of other activities like my freelance work and disturbance in the workout routine because of a physical injury.
The unsustainable trade-off in productivity
Today I took a lot of intermittent naps throughout the day. I even had narrowed down to a few blog ideas to write about, but couldn’t work on them because the brain can’t concentrate.
I ate food but still felt hungry. I went to the washroom but always felt stomach issues. Every moment my eyes are open; they are showing me the mistake I did when postponing the sleep last night.
You also hamper your cognitive abilities. The front part of the brain controls critical cognitive skills in humans.
Your thinking capacity is reduced, which reflects in all forms of communication and the mental process you are trying to put into work.
Sleep is vital because it detoxifies your brain.
The glymphatic system is a waste clearance pathway for the central nervous system. Diving deep will get into the science of sleep, but here is what effect it has when you don’t get enough sleep.
When you don’t sleep enough, the toxins are still in your brain the next day, because of which your mind doesn’t function properly. Short-term memory is also affected negatively throughout the day.
You can’t put a price on brain detox.
Detoxification is necessary for your brain to recover during sleep time. If you compromise with sleep, you can’t focus the next day at all.
Lethargy is all you will have. Sleep is all you will crave throughout the day. Finally when the auspicious night comes, please don’t even try to stretch it anymore just to get more office-work done. Because if you compromise today again, your work will be rubbish and you know it.
This blog belongs to a series of posts I am publishing in this 100-days streak. Today is day 88. Navigate to the end of article 22, for the references from day 23 onwards. If you would like to read the ones before day 22, here is the first one that documents them in the end.
