What is the Purpose of Buying Fake Followers?

Your popular reputation online has its downsides.

Last weekend, I found another scam on my SoundCloud account after I posted an episode of my podcast on all the platforms. It’s obvious that this is a bot who hasn’t listened to my show and thinks that it’s a song.

Here, the bot never mentioned getting more fake followers. The commenter mentioned a website called G00gle realscpro (Note: the people who created it don’t understand what copyright infringement is). I checked out their site, realscpro.com. It’s nothing but a way for people to buy fake followers.

Truth be told, ever since I started my podcast in 2015, I have only received comments from scammers asking me to buy fake followers. Many of those who commented never listened to the show because they talked about “tracks” or “tunes” or something related to the word song. Getting bots to increase ratings never appealed to me. I would rather have people listen to my podcast or read my articles.

However, I report and block all these comments to SoundCloud as spam, since that is what they are. By the way, this applies to any form of social media, not just SoundCloud.

I know that a few months ago, Dr. Mehmet Yildiz, who created ILLUMINATIONS, had to stall the publication in order to remove ‌these bots. It’s obvious that an author here bought fake followers to get popular on this site quickly. Buying fake bots is also a bad idea for another reason. In this article, I will explain why.

What Are the Reasons People and Companies Do This?

Everyone, and even businesses, do this for the same reasons: their own reputation and popularity. People are finding it difficult to stand out on the web or social media as it is getting crowded. This is not a recent phenomenon. People will ‌do anything to get a million followers. The fastest way is by buying bots.

Some people still believe that purchasing followers will cause an increase in organic ones. Because of the large number of bots that follow you, newcomers will believe you’re really popular. This is a mistaken assumption. Personally, I don’t follow anyone based on their number of followers. I’m following them because I already know them in person or because we have something in common. I’m probably one of the few people who doesn’t care how many online friends those I follow have. Otherwise, your internet popularity has nothing to do with it.

You might still think that’s a good idea. “I’d rather have more followers right away than wait years.” Unfortunately, this is a problem, which I will explain.

Why is it a bad idea to purchase fake followers?

  1. Fake followers do not engage with your content.

It probably seems like a good idea to buy followers so that the real ones know how popular you are and join in the conversation. But all you hear is silence on everything that you post. That’s the whole point of social media is to be social, right? Since you were asking for fake followers, either they are bots or people being paid to be on these fake lists. Do you know what an engagement rate is? Because it is something you should pay attention to on your channels.

Now that I mention it, there are fake followers who respond, but that is where problem number two comes in.

2. They do comment, but it’s either irrelevant or inappropriate.

Imagine you write something about your product or service, a celebrity dies, or a war breaks out. You check your comments and all you see are LOL and laughing emojis. Or these bots write something in the comments that has nothing to do with what you posted. The next thing that will happen is that your real followers will block or report you. Even real people know ‌you bought bots. It will definitely ruin your credibility on social media.

3. Fake Followers will never buy from you.

When you bought them, what did you expect? They are called fake followers for this reason. They are only there to raise your likes, not your profits. If you have a product or service to sell, do not do this. Otherwise, you won’t get paid with bots.

4. By buying fake followers, you intend to be scammed.

You can bet that this is something you didn’t expect to happen. It is likely that you will receive spam in your comments, urging others to gamble or visit a pornographic site.

Maybe you receive an unsuspecting phishing email pretending to be your bank, LinkedIn, Netflix, Instagram, and other accounts. Then you discover you’ve been duped and must change all of your passwords.

Once you buy fake followers, your real followers will also get spammed by them.

5. Using bots undermines the credibility of an account.

I am referring to your credibility as an influencer and company. Nobody will trust and buy from you. Social media is all about building relationships with customers, not losing them. As soon as you use fake followers, your customers will lose interest in your product or service. Don’t do that.

6. Instagram and other platforms will remove all fake followers.

That’s what they all do, and they can spot them ‌very easily. In any other case, you wasted money buying bots to help you gain popularity.

7. You break the site’s Terms of Service.

How on earth did you sign up for Instagram, Facebook, etc., if you don’t know what that is? No one ever stops to read the Terms of Service all the way through before they agree to it and sign on. And I bet ‌you don’t read the updated ones either.

8. You will get suspended or kicked out of that particular platform.

It is now common to see people getting kicked off of Facebook, or other social networks, for bullying or discriminatory comments. If they found out that you bought fake followers, they would either suspend or delete your account.

You mention ‌you want to build your reputation online. Do you think that buying bots is the best way to do this? Do you really believe it will enhance your popularity in the long run? I doubt it.

Despite all this, I’m still happy to have less than 1,000 real followers and that the number is flourishing slowly on all of my social networks. What about your thoughts? Would you still buy bots to get 5,000 followers instantly?
