Summary

Google is considering implementing paid tiers for advanced AI features, such as Bard Advanced, as part of its strategy to remain competitive in the AI space following Microsoft's partnership with OpenAI.

Abstract

Google, once a leader in AI, is adjusting its strategy to compete with Microsoft and OpenAI's recent advancements. With the introduction of projects like Bard and Gemini, Google is signaling a shift towards monetizing advanced AI functionalities. These changes come as a response to the high computational costs required to develop and run sophisticated AI models. Google plans to offer a free trial for its new Bard Advanced program, which will eventually be available through a Google One subscription, suggesting that premium AI features may become exclusive to subscribers, including those using Pixel devices. This move reflects a broader trend where basic AI services remain free while more powerful capabilities are offered at a premium.

Opinions

  • Google's AI strategy is reactive to Microsoft's partnership with OpenAI, indicating a need to catch up in the AI race.
  • There is an expectation that the future of AI services will include both free and paid tiers, with advanced features reserved for paying customers.
  • The high computational power required for AI development and operation justifies the potential shift towards paid advanced AI services.
  • Google's introduction of Bard Advanced and its integration into the Google One subscription model suggests a strategic move to enhance the value proposition of its paid services.
  • The tech industry anticipates that AI capabilities will increasingly become a monetized aspect of tech companies' offerings, following Google's lead.

Google wants to catch up with Microsoft and OpenAI, so they continue to expand their AI offerings. However, there are increasing signs that advanced AI functions will no longer be free in the future.

Google was the number one in AI and offered a lot of great tools based on AI and also had great analytic tool in their Google Cloud, but with ChatGPT Microsoft shocked the world and Google. Now, they have to catch up with projects like Bard and Gemini.

Google has made a name for itself in the world of artificial intelligence by developing groundbreaking tools like Google Maps, Assistant, Translate and many others. Until now, these services have been free, but that could change.

The computing power you need to develop but also to run such AI models and services are very high. That could lead to the fact that companies like Google but also Microsoft and Co. will offer paid tiers of their products. An example of this is the upcoming program Bard Advanced, which is based on the well-known language model Bard, but is intended to offer more powerful functions, especially in the mathematical area. Google is planning a free three-month trial for new users before Bard Advanced becomes available as part of the Google One subscription[1][2].

As Google continues to expand its AI offering by adding them into more and more products or even new products and services, there are increasing signs that the expanded functions could become chargeable in the future.

Google One is a paid subscription that offers expanded cloud storage as well as advanced features for services like Google Drive and Google Photos. It is believed that Google could offer advanced AI features exclusively for Google One subscribers on Pixel devices in the future. A similar approach can already be seen in some of Google Photos’ features today, while the more basic AI features will continue to be available for free[2][3].
