What is Dark Roast Security?
A publication home to stories from security professionals, thought-provoking articles, and informational content about the wide range of security topics and threats.
The Mission
The goal of this publication is to inspire, educate, and share ideas about InfoSec. Dark Roast Security is a platform designed to bring people together that are passionate about sharing their knowledge or want to learn something new about Cybersecurity.
Through this publication, I hope to share experiences of Cybersecurity professionals across the industry, spread knowledge, and publish thought-provoking content for our readers.
What is Cybersecurity?
Cybersecurity has become so important in today’s modern world. For any non-IT reader, think about all of the technology you use today. Your smartphone, maybe a tablet, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and all your other smart devices. Even if you don’t have all these devices, I bet you have an internet presence, whether on social media, or just for online shopping, your information is out there.
Unfortunately, the attackers on the dark-web are after all of that, every second of every day. The scam calls you get, the junk email, the junk mail, it’s always a result of malicious actors trying to trick you into providing personal information.
Raising Awareness
The purpose of Dark Roast Security is to raise awareness about cybersecurity and how important it is. Too many people don’t understand the internet or don’t know what the dark web is. Five years ago, I didn’t either. In my opinion, that is a huge problem. How can we be so reliant on the internet but not know the dangers of it?
Many of you, like me, use the internet for banking, shopping, streaming, and much more, but aren’t aware of the steps you should take to protect your information from being stolen. I want to help people learn and understand how to protect themselves, because as long as there are people out there falling for these attacks, companies and individuals will continue to fall victim to data breaches and identity theft.
Sharing Our Stories & Experiences in the Industry
Cybersecurity is a relatively new field, so whenever I’m asked what I do for work and I say “I work in security”, the majority of the time people don’t really know what that means, or may understand what it is, but probably have no idea what I do from day to day.
I know I’m not the only one that deals with this, which is why I want Dark Roast to be a place for Security professionals to write about what they do. I want people to know what security really is about because most security teams do so much work in the background and no one ever knows about it.
About the Editor
For those of you who don’t know, I work as a Security Engineer for a healthcare company. Most of my job is to design, deploy, and maintain all of our security products that help keep the company safe. This includes antivirus, email filtering, and web filtering, among others.
Antivirus protects computers against malicious files like malware and trojans, and is something everyone should have installed on their computers.
Email filtering is a tool that scans inbound and outbound emails to block spam and phishing (a way to trick users to provide their username and password) before they get delivered to the intended recipients. Most email security products even do post-delivery analysis to protect users from malicious emails that were delivered to them.
Lastly, web filtering is a product companies use to protect internet traffic by preventing their employees from browsing to sites that are known for phishing or malware or could pose a threat to the company in terms of liability issues.
Long story short, much of my job is to maintain these security platforms and monitor and respond to threats that are detected by these defense mechanisms. In addition to that, it’s important to keep computers up to date, so another thing I’m responsible for is assessing our IT infrastructure, including the network, servers, end-user computers, and applications for vulnerabilities, or weaknesses, that could allow for attackers to get onto the private network and take advantage of the access they’ve been able to obtain. It’s important to make sure systems are kept up to date and secured as best as they can be.
For our non-tech readers, I’m sure your head is spinning so I’ll leave it at that! It’s a lot to take in. There’s so much to learn when it comes to Cybersecurity and the learning will never stop because hackers find new ways to steal information every day.
That’s one of the things I love about working in InfoSec: it’s always go, go, go and there are so many interesting aspects.
I hope this publication is a place both tech and non-tech individuals can come to learn something new and find interesting content about a wide range of security topics.
Through this publication, the goal is to:
- Provide a platform for other passionate security writers to share their knowledge and stories
- Spread awareness of day-to-day happenings in the Security world
- Pique other’s interest in Cybersecurity
- Educate people on various threats and ways to protect against them
