What is a Kicker?

The ins and outs of Kicking it on Medium

Here are my 200 words or fewer “dumbed down” version of what a Kicker is. And no, I’m not referring to sports.

I’ve tried writing about Kickers once before, but apparently, no one read it. No one hardly ever uses a Kicker, and then when they do… facepalm.

Imagine you have a stack of manilla file folders. You need to come up with ONE word to place on the tab to show what the contents of that folder will be.

That’s a Kicker.

I was going to say to think of it as that one extra #tag you wish you could use but since there is a limit of five, but people don’t always use tags appropriately either so that may be a bad example. Here is just a partial list of potential Kickers.

As an editor, it is my job to make sure that things are as they are supposed to be before I hit Publish. I’d like to not have to hold up an entire Q, etc. over something so simple and 100% under the control of those who submit!
