That is the question

What is a Kicker? Should you use a Kicker? How do you create a Kicker? What a Kicker isn’t!

What is a Kicker?

As gravity well (Rob Tomlin) said over on Feedium recently,

I use it to classify the types of stories I write. For example: “Getting Started”, “Freelancing Tips”, “Financial Advice”, etc.

In other words, almost like the tags, you use before submitting a story. Then there’s Casey Botticello take on Kickers.

A kicker is a short phrase that precedes the title of the article. Kickers can be used as hooks or to further explain titles and they can be used to present a section or classification of content.

Another way to think of it is it’s like a filing system. You have files at home: mortgage, car payments, insurance, taxes, etc. Those would be Kickers.

Should you use a Kicker?

It’s completely optional. No publication that I’m aware of requires it. They’re easy to create if run across one. I posed the question to Medium’s own Casey Botticello. Either my question got lost in his notifications or his response got lost in mine. So Casey Botticello, if you want to weigh in, feel free.

Personally, sometimes I use them, and sometimes I don’t. I know. Very definitive. It depends on the story. If it’s something a little more serious, then I’ll use a kicker. Obviously, there is no kicker used on a short-form submission.

How do you create a Kicker?

I don’t believe in reinventing the wheel. Casey has already written that up AND given us screenshots in the step-by-step process! #teamcasey

What a Kicker isn’t!

Yes, I made this header larger. I want to make sure I have your attention because as an editor of 8 publications; I see a lot of, shall we say, stuff.

A Kicker is NOT:

*A second subtitle

*A second title

*A place for an additional string of tag words

*A place to say hi to your momma

*A place to publicly post your Christmas wish list

Or anything else ridiculous. Okay. I’ve seen them all except the last two, but hey, it’s only March. 2021 is still young yet.
