Quickie: What Is a Coregasm?
Why yoga may give you more pleasure than you realize

Women all know that doing exercise has numerous benefits, but did you know that one of those benefits can be an orgasm?
According to research conducted by Indiana University, exercises that work out the core abdominal muscles can induce an orgasm in many women. During the study, which was published in Sexual and Relationship Therapy, researchers found 124 women who say they experience exercise-induced orgasms (EIO) and 246 women who have exercise-induced sexual pleasure (EISP). In an online survey, these women were asked about their experiences, and researchers found that 40 percent of them had an EIO or EISP at least ten times and the majority of women who experience EIO do not have sexual thoughts when they orgasm during exercise.
“Orgasm is not necessarily a sexual event….”
The most common exercises that cause women to have an orgasm are:
- Weight lifting (26.5 percent)
- Yoga (20 percent)
- Bicycling (15.8 percent)
- Running (13.2 percent)
- Walking/hiking (9.6 percent)
Although it’s clear that women are having orgasms during exercise, researcher Debby Herbenick says that more study needs to be done to determine why this is happening.
“These data are interesting because they suggest that orgasm is not necessarily a sexual event, and they may also teach us more about the bodily processes underlying women’s experiences of orgasm,” said Herbenick. “Magazines and blogs have long highlighted cases of what they sometimes call ‘coregasms.’ But aside from early reports by Kinsey and colleagues, this is an area of women’s sexual health research that has been largely ignored over the past six decades.”
