What If?

Best friends Christina and Francine were having lunch at their favorite restaurant. Christina asked, “How is your Mom?” Francine rolled her eyes, swaying her head side to side, and said, “I don’t know, I haven’t called her in a while.” “Why not?” “You know we never get along.” “Why are you always so angry with her?” Christina asked. “She robbed me of the opportunity to live a better life. I could have been a doctor,” she said, putting her wine glass down on the table. “You hate the sight of blood,” Christina reminded her. Still swaying her head, “well, I could have been the first female president.” “You don’t like politics.” “I wanted to be a lawyer,” Francine said, taking another sip of her red wine. “You don’t follow or obey the rules or laws.” “Whose side are you on?” Francine shouted. Putting down her glass, spilling wine on the white tablecloth. “Your side,” Christina assured her best friend. “I was always on your side. I thought you loved the way your life is now.” “I do,” she said staring into Christina’s eyes. “I love my job. The pay is great. I set my own time and days and I get to have lunch with you every day. What’s not to like?” she rants on, cutting into her fish fillet. “Then why complain about what you could have had?” About to put a piece of fish in her mouth, she paused. Knowing something connects, Francine continues, “think back, all of what your mom did, bring you here. Her decisions gave you the life you have. Enjoy it and stop complaining.” Handing her, her cellphone, Francine said, “Call that woman and thank her for not giving up on you and guiding you to where you are now. Because sister, if she had allowed you to do what you wanted, you would be dead! And I know that because I was with you every step you take. She is the mother I dreamed of having. You know my life. I had no mother.”

Many of us wasted our lives yearning for what if, instead of enjoying or improving what we have now. ‘What if,’ stops many of us from living our best life and deprives us of happiness.
