What I Look for as an Editor with New Writers Welcome
Let’s make all submissions super smooth for editors and writers!

As an editor with New Writers Welcome, here are the things I look for in submissions.
Time really flies when you’re having fun. I’m happy to say that I’ve been an editor with New Writers Welcome for 5 months already!
During this time, I always try to support writers in any way I can. To ensure that your story is published quickly, take a look at this list of things that I check stories for. Your submission can be processed a lot faster!
✅ Grammarly
Although there is a bit of a debate about using Grammarly, the tool does do a good job at picking up basic grammar and spelling errors. Run your story through the tool to weed out mistakes. We often ask writers to do this.
Don’t worry, Grammarly has a free version and it works great.
✅ Formatting
There are basic formatting guidelines for the publication. Robert Ralph has written a very helpful story to cover the required formatting.
In a nutshell, always make sure your title and subtitle are properly formatted.
Underneath the subtitle, you also need to add a photo.
✅ Plagiarism
I probably don’t need to explain this one. Please don’t plagiarize! If you previously published your story online in another blog, include the link.

✅ Random words being capitalized
This is a surprisingly common error! There are sometimes random words in sentences that are capitalized. Grammarly can spot these for you.
✅ Run-on Sentences
I’ve seen this quite often as well. In my time as a writer, I’ve learned that writing blogs requires a different flair.
It’s best to write short and simple sentences. Avoid sentences that go on, and on, and on, and on…..
✅ Value provided in a story
Before you submit your story, ask yourself these questions.
- What value are you providing for the reader?
- Can you make them laugh?
- Will they learn something?
Unless you have a close relationship with your readers, they probably won’t want to read about your son’s random soccer game. If you want to write about your bad day, don’t just write about your bad day. Add value to the story by showing readers how you can handle a bad day or something you learned from your experience.
✅ Readability (white space, photos)
Some writers submit a story full of text. There is just one big, giant paragraph of words! Improve readability by adding some white space, quotes, and photos.
Imagine a movie without sound effects. That is how it comes across and your reader will be bored very quickly!

✅ Organization
You need to lead the reader through an organized story. Don’t throw in random thoughts or sentences haphazardly. Provide clear explanations and highlight the takeaway of the story at the very end.
Make sure to lead your reader with a clear process. Does your story explain things in detail? Does your story have a solid conclusion or a valuable takeaway for the reader?
✅ Tags
For New Writers Welcome, you need to add the tag “New Writers Welcome”. Beware of other tags that look similar. “New Writers Welcome” is the only correct tag.
Medium allows 5 tags. Use all of them to increase visibility for your story.
✅ Properly Credited Photos
All photos need to be copyright-free and have a proper source link for crediting. This is non-negotiable. If you’re not sure, stick with sites like Pixabay or Unsplash. I use Pexels.
✅ On Topic
New Writers Welcome only accepts the topics below. If your story does not fall into any of these categories, it will be declined for publishing.
- Self-Development (life lessons)
- Medium Help (not follow for follow or read for read)
- Personal Stories
- Poems
- Social Media
- Health and Fitness
- Mental Health
I hope this will clarify things for your future submissions! Please note that this list is what I always look for. Other Editors will have something similar, but it may not be exactly the same. If you’re in doubt, make sure to read the submission rules carefully!
Robert has already written a valuable bank of helpful stories here. Feel free to check it out!
