WRITING

What I Learned by Writing Every Day

A selection of articles from personal experience

Photo by Trent Szmolnik on Unsplash

I’m a good writer. I think. Could I be great? maybe, we all could. But I’m not, although that’s okay.

Being good takes work. All writers know that. To be great means total immersion. Few writers know this or commit to this.

This article shares a selection of milestones about my journey, from a non-writer to an almost good writer.

Writing for Illumination

I wrote the article below to share the insights that I discovered soon after Dr Mehmet Yildiz invited me to write for Illumination.

Since the piece above was written my stats now look like this (note Illumination article at №4 on the list and climbing fast):

By writing for Illumination I learned that there’s so much more to our creative work than numbers:

  1. Engagement is reciprocal
  2. Community is powerful
  3. Collaboration solidifies fusion
  4. Writers are readers
  5. We are better together

Illumination is a wonderful community!

Writing ideas

This article is about the methods I learned to harvest my ideas.

I was a newbie at the time, so I wrote it to share the approach I developed with my fellow beginners.

“Read, read, read. Read everything — trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You’ll absorb it. Then write. If it’s good, you’ll find out. If it’s not, throw it out of the window.”

— William Faulkner, Nobel Laureaute in Literatur

The real trick is to read, write, and repeat every day.

A writing milestone

Within six months I’d written 105 articles. The article below is a reflection of the lessons I learned during that time.

Since then my back catalog has grown by 50%, 150+ articles thus far.

Also … I’m still trying to improve.

A writing experiment

This article was experimentation. A test. Here’s what I did:

  • I wrote three articles (that soon became 4) of similar quality
  • The topic was leadership and business for all 4

Within a few hours, on the same day, I submitted all four pieces to three different publications, hoping to achieve:

  • 100% curation, and
  • 100% distribution

I was surprised by the outcome.

The results … well see for yourself below:

Another writing milestone

The article below was inspired by Sinem, an incredible writer. In fact, Sinem has written a few pieces for Illumination.

I’m still none the wiser why the article I wrote about below went viral.

Also, huge thanks to Nicole for sharing this on Publishous.

Final Thoughts

As I mentioned above, creating a habit of reading, writing, and repeating the same each day has been instrumental. I discovered that reading is by far the best activity for me, to improve my writing.

On that note, I invite you to read about a skill that I learned to digest more content, more often.

“Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary.”

— Jim Rohn
