What I Earned My First Month on Medium
Is it what I had hoped for?
It’s mandatory to write this piece, isn’t it? No matter what, I’m following in the footsteps of the people before me. I’m going to tell the world what I earned during my first month of writing on Medium.
Is August my first month?
Technically no, august is not my first month. I joined Medium at the beginning of July. However, I didn’t enroll in the Medium partner program before the very end of July. During July, I only wrote one poem that I placed behind the paywall. As it was just a couple of days left of July when I did this, I feel like August is my first month.
What had I hoped for?
To be honest, at the beginning of August, I would have been happy if I’d only earned one dollar. Yes, I’ve read about all those mythical creatures that earn $100 or even $1000. Nonetheless, I was a little skeptical if this is possible for a normal person.
When I surprisingly hit my first $1, I started to dream bigger. Now my goal was to earn $5 to pay off my medium subscription.
And you know what?
I DID IT!!!

What did I earn in august?
Drum roll.
I earned $6.87
I know it’s far from the writers that earn over $100 and $1000.
I’m still happy with my result.
Now my goal is to keep my earnings above $5. That way, it feels like my medium subscription is free.
My top stories
In August, I published 14 stories, half of them poems. I anticipated that the poems would earn less than my longer pieces. However, I was wrong.
My 3 top stories were:
1. The Ocean
2. How I Increased My Confidence
How I Increased My Confidence is a longer piece, but The Ocean is a poem.
It puzzled me that a poem is my second highest earning piece, as I was guessing that the longer pieces would have longer reading time and, accordingly, higher earnings.
The Shadow of You is fiction, and I didn’t anticipate it to do as well as it did either.
The future
Nonetheless, I’m hoping to continue to earn those $5 as a writer on medium. I’m looking forward to September and whatever this month is going to bring.
