What did I learn from La La Land?

People love what other people are passionate about

From ICG Magazine

In 2017, I happened to watch Damien Chazelle’s masterpiece, La La Land, and to be honest, I enjoyed every bit of it. After wasting time on several ‘boring’ romance movies, La La Land proved be a unique and breath-taking experience.

A waggish, gorgeous, and definitely magical, romantic drama, La La Land tells the story of Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), whose passion for their respective art (and their consequent choices) ends up intervening their musical love story.

Being the front-runner for 2017 Oscars, La La Land ended up bagging six Academy Awards, an extraordinary feat to say the least. Undoubtedly, this jazz-infused theatrical gem deserved all the praise and was worthy winner of all the accolades.

However, the part which struck me the most was this line,

People love what other people are passionate about!

And even today, when I think about it, the veracity of this line gives me a lot to ponder over.

I am one of those millennials for whom there should exist some kind of external motivation to get things done and this line perfectly sums up the underlying truth about this dependency.

Being a sports fanatic, there are certain players, who have been a source of constant inspiration for me for last few years. Be it Rafael Nadal on a tennis court or Eden Hazard on a football pitch or Stephen Curry on a basketball court, none of them has ever failed to not inspire me to get out of my comfort zone and challenge myself.

Why?

I think the best possible answer lies in the emotional engagement that I feel so often with any of the above-mentioned superstars. Their passion and commitment for their respective sports is one of the catalysts which, at least I believe, has moved me over the years and kept me running, even in the times of despair and frustration.

Moreover, my love is not only limited to these sports moguls rather I get inspired by every person, who is committed to his cause and has been true to his work. Thus, when I think about this line, with the aforementioned context, it makes complete sense, suggesting that I am definitely one of those who love what other people are passionate about.

Nonetheless, I don’t see it as something that can take us far in our lives. I mean, it is okay to get attached to people because you love their commitment and diligence but at the end of the day, motivation lies within.

Especially, for a person like me, who has been seeing these greats and has been following them for quite some time, this feeling of emotional bonding cannot lift us up unless there is someone within us, telling us to keep working hard in the face of adversity and to find our own passion.

I don’t undervalue this emotional attachment but at the very same time, I am of the view that this dependency on others does not impact us in a positive way. Additionally, this reliance does nothing but comforts us as it keeps us free from the responsibility of awakening our inner beings. Therefore, this whole motivation mantra can only lead us to ‘intent’ but all that matters in the end is the execution.

Furthermore, the question arises that for how long one can rely on others to lift him or to inspire him because if the people, an individual is looking up to, had weighted for others to lead them, they would not have achieved success in their respective careers.

To conclude, there is no denying that we get attracted towards others, mostly because of their unwavering belief in themselves and their passion but at the same time, we should all have the understanding that others can’t help us unless our inner self pushes us. In short,

once we are inspired from the within, our grit and perseverance can lead us to unthinkable heights.
