What Can We Learn by Reading Someone’s Writing
Three areas we can all learn from their writings
Reading a few other writers’ posts has been my daily habit. If you ask whether it has been helpful, I will answer with an affirmation!
If we want to write well, we must read what others are writing.
Of course, I must confess that some posts are too technical for me, and I would not be reading them. But we do have the choice to select.
Let me share three areas in that I benefitted by reading articles by others.
1. Get ideas or inspiration for my writing
When I read someone’s writings, I observe how their audience responds to what they share. Are there many claps and comments? If there are few claps and comments, could there be a reason?
Some new writers can write very well, but they have fewer claps and comments because they have a limited number of followers.
When I spot deserving writers, I will leave some encouraging words for them. They have put in the effort, so I should reciprocate by giving them some support.
2. Get tips and relevant advice from experienced writers
Many editors of publications share how they feel about some issues and give good advice. By following them, we receive valuable information.
Many writers would share about their growth in Medium. We can consider some good habits.
Some share openly about their life experiences, and I salute them for their boldness.
These are authentic writings because they give us a perspective we cannot find elsewhere.
3. Learn the tone and style of the writer’s writing
Every writer has a different tone and style. No two writers will write in the same way.
Tone refers to the manner in that the writer shares through their words. It can be formal, informal, serious, or humorous. They communicate their tone of writing through their usage of words and sentence structure.
Style refers to the writer’s approach to expressing their ideas. It encompasses the use of literary devices like metaphor and imagery.
Both tone and style are essential to creating a unique voice that resonates with the audience. That’s what attracts you to specific authors.
In summary
We need to read articles written by others as we write. It gives us perspective and encouragement, knowing we are in a community that enjoys writing.
