What Are Your Motivated To Do When Fear Is No Longer An Option?
Success redefined.

What would you do if fear was no longer an option?
- Publish that novel?
- Complete that degree
- Ask for a promotion
- Move to a new city?
- Start a non-profit?
All of us have fears — the fear of failure, rejection, and the fear of the unknown. Fear can keep you stuck. But what if you embraced fear and allowed it to propel you towards everything you ever wanted?
What separates the people who achieve the life they desire, and those who don’t, isn’t the absence of fear but the presence of purpose, persistence, and planning.
Purpose
Passion is about what lights you. It is what you are naturally drawn to. To quote Oprah Winfrey, “ Your true passion should feel like breathing; it’s that natural.”
I appreciated the insight in “How To Discover Your Passion And Purpose In Life: A 10-Year Journey.” It’s a great read.
If you’re used to living other people’s expectations, you may be out of touch with what lights you up. I recall my schoolmate who loved acting on stage. She was a natural. But her parents wanted her to go into law school. She also excelled in studying law, going so far as graduating top in her class.
But she found no joy in the field of law.
She did become a lawyer and hated every minute of it. It came as no surprise that she quit law ten years later. She returned to university to complete a degree in drama and set up her own theatre company.
When I met up with her recently, I saw a person filled with passion for following her heart.
Your passion is not something static. It’s constantly evolving. But it does require inquiry. We are all multidimensional beings. It takes time to discover what lights you up.
Purpose
The lesson about becoming attuned to what lights you up is that it can propel you towards greater self-inquiry and provide you with fuel and focus on creating.
Studies show that what’s more important than passion is purpose. While passion lights you up, having a purpose gives your life meaning.
While it sounds ideal to find purpose in what you’re passionate about, it is not always easy or necessary. Often, hard work and dedication to a cause greater than yourself make you passionate about that field, rather than the other way around. Dedicating your life to something purposeful will make life more fulfilling.
Planning
Discovering your purpose needs to be followed up with a road map to living your purpose. Do some research on the subject. Find mentors among those who are successfully doing what you want to do.
Schedule into your routine an action plan on what you hope to achieve. Have short-term deadlines for each step you need to take.
Perseverance
Throw yourself into your purpose. Be accountable for accomplishing your goals, and don’t give up.
Through her research, Dr. Angela Duckworth’s TED Talk, “Grit: The power of passion and perseverance,” found that perseverance is a significant predictor of future success. Science tells us that you can cultivate perseverance.
Finally, do not underestimate the power of support from friends, family, and social groups to help you stay on track.
Two inspirational books on achieving your purpose are Robin Sharma’s “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari” and Tony Robbin’s “Awaken The Giant Within.”
