What a Broken Plate Taught Me

How to remain joyfully whole

Photo by RODNAE Productions from Pexels

“We have to discard the past / and, as one builds / floor by floor, window by window, / and the building rises, / so do we keep shedding — first, broken tiles, / then proud doors… and each new day/gleams / like an empty / plate.”

Pablo Neruda

The other day when I reached for our standing dustpan in the closet to do some sweeping, I noticed that a broken plate was inside. Little did I know I would learn a lesson from that plate.

I said thank you to my son for sweeping up the plate. He told me he had forgotten to let me know it had broken the night before. I told him not to worry. I had broken a cup the day before when I accidentally dropped something on it.

As I looked at this broken plate, I began to contemplate life. It is enthralling sometimes when something simple in life can capture your attention.

On my 100-day journey exploring habits, routines, and creativity, the act of sweeping began an inner journey of self-love.

I thought about the choices we have in life. We can always choose to view things differently.

Just like this plate, I can choose to remain broken. But I can also choose to sweep away the pieces and start anew.

Throughout life, we all break apart at times.

I know there are moments where I dwell upon the broken parts of life. However, just like my son, I can sweep it up and focus on becoming a whole person again.

Whenever you have powerful emotions, your heart breaks wide open. These cracks are beautiful. They mean you can let more love and more wholeness flow through.

To remain whole, we need to go through the process of breaking at points in time. Feeling the sorrow, the regret, the anger is all part of finding our wholeness again.

Every day I feel I am learning how to be myself. I break open; then I sweep away the pieces that do not fit me anymore.

At each moment, I am becoming more.

Just like a broken plate can be an opportunity to start fresh, deciding to focus on becoming whole can bring so much joy.

My prayer for you is to focus on what makes you whole. Those broken pieces can be swept away to reveal something beautiful about you. Focus on learning how to be yourself. You will find your whole self this way.
